FortWilliam was ideally located for our needs, just eight minutes from the airport, making it a convenient place to stay after our evening flight. The directions provided were excellent and very easy to follow. However, the accommodation wasn't quite what we had expected. Entering through the front door, we were greeted by numerous pairs of shoes and communal living areas, giving the property more of a hostel or student accommodation feel than a traditional guest house. We weren't met by a host on arrival (in fact, we never met the host); instead, another resident pointed us towards our room upstairs. It left us feeling a little unsure whether we were in the right place and, throughout our stay, we felt more like we were walking through someone's home than staying in guest accommodation. The room itself was spacious with lovely large windows, but there were a few maintenance issues. There were cobwebs in several places, the bathroom towels were very well worn, and although two Wi-Fi networks and passwords had been provided, we weren't able to get a connection in our room. One of our biggest concerns was security. We discovered that our bedroom door could not be locked from the outside, meaning we couldn't leave any belongings behind when we went out for dinner. We were also told that the main entrance is never locked, which wasn't something we were particularly comfortable with. The bedroom had only a hook-and-eye latch on the inside, which still left a small gap to the hallway. The gardens at the front of the property are attractive, and there appear to be several separate guest rooms within the grounds, which looked charming from the outside. Overall, while the location was excellent and this style of accommodation may suit travellers looking for a more communal, informal environment, it simply wasn't the experience we were expecting or one that suited us personally.

The room felt rather tired and could benefit from some updating. It was very creaky, there were quite a few cobwebs, the fridge could have done with a clean, and the bathroom towels were noticeably threadbare. We were also disappointed by the lack of security. The bedroom door could not be locked when we left the room, we were advised that the main entrance is never locked, and we never met the host during our stay. The property appeared to have permanent residents living there, which gave it more of a student accommodation or shared house feel than a guesthouse. While this style of accommodation may appeal to some travellers, we personally found it unwelcoming and didn't feel entirely comfortable during our stay.
