A superb, comfortable, charming hotel in the heart of Gouda
The hotel is charming, with gorgeous, cozy, comfortable rooms. The staff is great, the location perfect, and cleanliness is impeccable throughout.
The only reason I give it a 9 and not a 10 is that the breakfast was somewhat disappointing in that the menu was promising, but the quality of the food was not quite up to it. Otherwise, the room in which it was served was spectacular and it was still an enjoyable moment, just not on par with the otherwise high standards of the establishment.

Quiet well located hotel in the centre of Gouda. Good value for money.
Amazing breakfast, gourmet choices. Very quiet establishment with charm and history. Private feeling with limited rooms. Clean bed.
The decoration is overdone and baroque, like a candy box. The staff forgot to empty a waste bin in my room. Corridors are a maze with lots of steps and half levels.

A very elegant and luxurious place to stay.
Lovely large, comfortable room. Beautiful surroundings and location. Breakfast was presented in a really appealing way, with multiple options, both cooked or chilled. Cooked options were separately ordered. The outdoor area was really attractively decorated, inviting and luxurious.
We were able to store our touring bikes safely and securely, a great bonus.
Booking in the restaurant seemed overly complicated, and 3 or 4 course menus being the only option due to the nature of the fine dine experience.

beautiful old building and grounds (inside garden etc)
we didn't have breakfast but the 1
michelin star restaurant of the hotel is excellent and recommended. location is very central but quiet.
the room was tiny and a bit weirdly designed, with the sink at the feet of the bed and the mirror in front of really high for a small person.

Place worth visiting
The accommodation overall was good, room spacious and staff at reception very friendly. Breakfast was good and excellent location, near to attractions and transport
I loved the history of the building and how it was developed into nice boutique hotel.
The steep steps 😂 and our upstairs neighbours couldn't sit stil...very annoying throughout our whole visit..

That said, WSHS is a wonderful place to stay and I would gladly return — but next time, I’ll likely skip the breakfast.
I recently stayed at WSHS in Gouda for the second time, having visited two years ago as well. I’m happy to say that the hotel remains just as beautiful and charming as I remember. The design is stunning, the atmosphere warm and inviting, and the staff are incredibly kind and welcoming — they truly make you feel at home.
However, I was quite disappointed with the breakfast this time. Unfortunately, it has noticeably declined in quality compared to my previous visit. At €25 per person, I expected a much higher standard. In fact, I believe there are more satisfying options available at a lower price in other, even more modest hotels. For the same amount, a visit to a local café or even Starbucks would have provided better value.

Was slightly disappointed with the establishment based on what was presented online.
Shower didn’t drain well so had to ask for extra floor towels so it would not run into room. Also, thought about eating in the restaurant because it looked so nice, but they’re was never anyone there. Always empty.

Underwhelming.
Great location.
We booked this property months in advance and let them know it was for our wedding weekend — which is exactly why I purposely booked the suite.
When I arrived with three suitcases and a bunch of totes (all wedding-related stuff), the receptionist saw me struggling through the glass doors and didn’t even come to help. I accidentally slammed the door (it had no hinges), and instead of greeting me, she said, “Can you close the door? It’s really cold in here.” I was standing right in front of her with all my bags — no welcome, no assistance, just that.
To make it worse, the room they originally gave us was a duplex — definitely not what I booked, and nowhere near big enough for my makeup artist, photographer, and bridesmaids. We had to go back to reception and ask to be moved to the actual suite we reserved. Still, not even a card or a small gesture to say “Happy wedding weekend.” Nothing.
The staff were shockingly untrained. The night before the wedding, I called reception for two very basic things:
1. A toothbrush (which I was told, “I don’t think we have those.”)
2. Breakfast to be delivered to the room, since I had to start getting ready at 6:30 AM. All they could offer were two boiled eggs and a cup of tea — yet the next morning at the buffet, I saw plenty of bottled yogurts, pastries, etc.
And then, the final touch — we came back to our room after our wedding reception, and the bed was completely unmade. Housekeeping had come in and changed the towels but left the bed a mess. So yes, we spent our wedding night making our own bed.
I hope the property can understand that a hotel is not just the rooms. It is mostly the people and the service.

lovely hotel, but its lacking some proper hotel amenities
The historic building and location within Gouda were amazing. Lovely room with comfortable bed & shower.
There is no bar or restaurant available sunday till tuesday. This is very disappointing, knowing it is a high end hotel. At least have a bar available.
Breakfast had 2 option; basic or 'a la carte'. basic gave minimum option, 'a la carte' contained the egg omelet/ pancakes, etc which you expect to be available in a basic breakfast. Not for double the price.

Not good value for money, far better out there
Courtyard was nice
Cocktails were poor, room showed signs of age, was charged for food and drinks we didn’t have. No gluten free options at breakfast.

Fabulous Stsy
What a fabulous hotel. My first Relais and Chateau peppery. A lovely 17th building with a great room and view. Behind the church close to but far enough away from the shopping areas. Very clean and I didn’t ind there’s no elevator! This is history!
The staff is wonderful.

Historic luxury in the heart of Gouda
It was a beautiful building, well restored into the various event spaces they use today. Historic touches merged with modern luxury at its best

Beautiful hotel, fabulous professional staff, fantastic location
This hotel is an absolute gem, with beautiful rooms, beautiful courtyard and fabulous staff. The breakfast was amazing, with a fab selection of menu options. The location couldn’t be more central, with the market square, shops, restaurants and bars all a short walk from the hotel.
The hotel has some pre-bookable parking spaces in a carpark called Klein Amerika Parking Lot, which is a bit of a walk to/from the hotel.

Very attractive location and a beautiful building
Location, public spaces and the staff’s attention to every detail
Prefer a separate bathroom rather than in the room itself
Breakfast fruit was disappointing, I would have expected something more seasonal

Lovely hotel, wonderful service, great location.
The staff were exceptional.
The bathroom could use better light.
The stairs going up into the loft where the 3rd bed was, felt narrow, steep and a little dangerous at night.

I had a lovely stay!
The design of the decor was really what struck me the most. It was dark and funky and moody and romantic, which I think really contrasted well with the courtyard’s aesthetic.
I didn’t have a bathtub in my room which was a bummer- although, I didn’t ask for a room switch , so maybe I could have changed it?

A luxurious orphanage
We had a wonderful stay in this extraordinarily beautiful hotel in the buildings of an old orphanage/cloister: a marvellous brick building with red shutters and a spacious patio. We received a very warm welcome and could enter our room a little bit before 15:00. We much appreciated the complementary glass of prosecco, which accompanied an invitation to dine in the hotel restaurant (which in the end we did not do). There are many beautiful details - too many to mention them all. We really liked the wooden roof beams, the colors of the room, the spacious shower, the shampoo/body lotion etc. The matrasses were also excellent. A true highlight was the breakfast, which is served in a stately room with a truly stunning mantelpiece and large painting. There was a small buffet combined with very attractive a la carte options (these are somewhat smaller dishes, so we combined two: pancakes and scrambled eggs, which were both delicious). Here, too, the service was excellent.
Actually, there's nothing to complain about. Maybe I can mention that we missed hooks to hang the wet towels.
For some travellers, it may interesting to know that - at least in our room - there was not a regular bathroom; rather, the sink is in the room, next to the sink is a glass door into the shower, and there is a separate WC.

The hotel was a wonderful place to spend two nights and the location could not have been better.
Breakfast was OK, but we felt the available selection was unnecessarily fancy. Like most people perhaps, we were expecting to find a 'normal' breakfast selection including a sliced bread & toast, a selection of cereals, cheeses and cold sliced meats (ham, salamis, etc.), scrambled / fried eggs, etc. None of these were readily available. Instead there was a small selection of local foods (including 3 types of peanut butter) and a menu selection of small cooked dishes prepared by the kitchen. I had the Croque Monsieur, which turned out to be a small disc-shaped bite, unnecessarily complicated by the addition of sharp flavours and truffel. I enjoyed it, but why not serve a simple traditional normal sized delicious croque monsieur? The second morning I chose the scrambled eggs, which I must say was delicious. I also asked for a small plate of traditional Gouda cheese and ham, to go with the local bread rolls, and that was a real treat. Coffee - delicious! Freshly pressed orange juice - delicious! Service absolutely wonderful. A good experience on the whole.
Our room (No 4) was rather dark. There was a standard lamp by the desk in the corner, which we had to switch on and point into the room. The bedside lights were bright, but mounted on the wall outside of the perimeter of the bed. If you wanted to read in bed then you had to turn the lamp to shine toward the bed. This lit up the entire bed, which meant the person lying in bed next to you was bathed in light and had no chance of going to sleep until you had switched off your light. On our second night, I placed a pillow upright between us, to stop my light shining onto my partner's side of the bed. Also, the coffee corner was very dark, no light anywhere, so I had to use the torch on my mobile phone to find the electric sockets before I could plug in the coffee machine and also to see how to operate the coffee machine. A little light in that corner would be helpful. Thank you.
