"Have a dip in the new hot tub on the West facing deck overlooking the Zen Garden pond filled with Koi and frequented by a variety of dragonflies: fiery red to blue and black striped ones flitting about the ferns. In June the pond is ringed with lavender and snow white oriental irises. In the evening on a crystal clear night with the deck lights off, the views of the stars are spectacular as there are no city lights! Floating in the hot tub gazing up at the stars, perhaps hearing an owl, it doesn't get more peaceful than that."

A twelve minute drive brings you to lovely and historical Mendocino Village with Victorian homes, beautiful shops, excellent restaurants, and the stunning cliffs of the California coast, a photographer's delight. For the photographers there are hikes to Russian Gulch waterfall, or the largest Redwoods of Montgomery Park,or. Noyo Harbor with its fleet of salmon seeking ships, plus the crashing of waves on the cliffs and ocean rocks, among so many other beautiful sights.
A seven minute drive from your retreat home, you arrive at downtown Fort Bragg, an artist community with lovely shops and galleries and great restaurants many which offer vegetarian, organic, vegan choices as this community is conscious of sustainability in its local farming and wine orchard, and world famous North Coast Brewery which has won many awards competing against the best German/European beers.
Each season the Mendocino county offers weekends of various activities: Wine Song in Sept., and Mushroom collecting in the fall, January has the famous Crab and Wine festival, Whale Watching in the Winter months. The lovely Botanical Gardens offer Rhododendrun contests and splendor in the gardens of the spring, Dahlias in summer, and Begonias in fall among others. Most fun for the families is Paul Bunyan Days Labor Day Weekend where there is competition among the loggers followed by the Fireman's Battle of Hoses, different fire stations compete to soak each other and the passersby who dare to get too close, lots of fun! For families there is the historical Skunk Train ride and the excellent train models in the old train house. Each summer the circus comes to town plus there are local musicals and drama. Very popular is the Mendocino Musical Festival in July, two weeks of performances each day which is also followed by the Cinema Festival. Dolores was a marvelous host. She was very responsive, and gave supportive thoughtful responses. She went well above and beyond expectations with helping us get settled, providing appetizers and cider for when we arrived for check in, and clearly takes excellent care of the property and grounds. It’s a perfect place for a large group to be in one place, and the house is set up so there are separated clusters of rooms and bathrooms so it also felt like we could all have our own private spaces as well as spacious common areas. We would definitely stay again!

Our family of 18 spent four wonderful days at this spacious home. The house looks exactly as listed, quietly nestled among the beautiful redwoods. There was ample parking space on site. Everything was spotless inside when we arrived. Each room of the house was thoughtfully and uniquely decorated with themed works of art from around the world. Bedrooms varied in size, but were great for our family.The kitchen had an abundant supply of tableware and cookware. Appliances were top notch; we really appreciated having two refrigerators. There was enough seating in the dining room for our entire family to dine together. There were also several tables and chairs out on the beautiful and spacious wood patio.The teenagers in our group really enjoyed playing ping pong and the chess board saw a lot of action. The Wi-Fi worked well and we loved outdoor firepit and spa.Just a word of caution, there are steps throughout the house, not just the stairways going up to the second level. They are well lit. But if you have mobility issues, this could be a concern.Overall, we had a wonderful stay at this home and would highly recommend it. Great home, host, and location.Rob & DorisJune 2026

The house is great overall – kitchen is well-equipped, property has lovely trails through the forest, bedrooms are nice, and StarLink internet connection works decently well. The host is very sweet and helpful, but our one complaint was that after driving 4 hours to get there, we would have been much happier if their tour of the house had been, say, 5-10 minutes long, rather than an hour and 45 minutes.

Pros: The home is very large, clean and comfortable. The rooms were very unique and interesting and our kids had a great time exploring them. The outside garden was beautiful and the host is very nice.Cons: Given the high price of the rental we were disappointed that many of the features listed were not available and we felt misled by the listing. For example the listing states there is a lake view, but there is no lake anywhere on the property. When we got there we were informed that the propane grill was unusable due to an incident with a bear but that the smoker was working. But we needed an extension cord that we didn't receive until after we needed it. It might have just been bad luck, but the hot tub that our kids were looking forward to was not working. Also it is not mentioned in the listing, but once we had booked and payed to stay there, we were informed that the house had electrical issues and the electricity might go out. Our electricity did go out in the middle of the night causing one of the guests CPAP machines to stop functioning and shut of hot water for awhile. Troubleshooting electrical problems was not what we were thinking we would have to do on our vacation. There are three electric panels and GFI plugs to test. Also elderly visitors should be aware that there are a number of awkward steps going in and out of each room that are potential trip hazards.Overall we felt that the number of issues was just too much to justify the high cost of the rental.
