About this house rental

Welcome to our woodland sanctuary!

This truly special getaway has something for everyone, whether you like sailing, kayaking, hiking, dining in the neighboring towns, or simply enjoying the natural woodland setting.

Our spacious, family-friendly ranch home features a bright living room with expansive windows looking onto the surrounding 1.5-acre woods. Vaulted ceiling, wood paneling, and a cozy fireplace complete the peaceful gathering space. Rustic flagstone floors invite you into an open dining room and newly renovated kitchen, while modern appliances—including brand new light fixtures and Frigidaire induction stove—make dining-in a pleasure. Three bedrooms, a den/office (with a pull-out couch), laundry room, sunroom with skylights, and a private master bathroom make space for multiple guests. Enjoy an additional guest bathroom complete with Japanese soaking tub, rain shower, and heated towel rack. The house has been newly upgraded with central air-conditioning, fans in all the bedrooms, on-demand hot water, all new windows and doors, and solar panels. Also, a 40A Level-2 EV charger is available for an additional fee.

A lush yard provides grass underfoot and flowers all summer long, and features a newly-installed patio with a Weber barbecue and fire pit. Bask in the sunny front yard while watching birds zip overhead, or stroll beneath the forest canopy in search of frogs and dragonflies. The animal life is vibrant, so keep an eye out for deer, fox, wild turkeys, squirrels, owls, ospreys, and chipmunks. At night, marvel at the panorama of twinkling fireflies, accompanied by a harmonious chorus of crickets and frogs.

Between forest, marsh, and seaside, the area offers a wealth of contrasts. A ten-minute walk takes you to Chaffinch Island Park, where trees give way to seaside wetlands, and the sound of forest life is replaced by the calls of osprey and other seabirds. The park offers picnic tables, grills, tidal pools, and a long stretch of sandy beach. Days can be spent watching boats go in and out of the Guilford Yacht Club, or dipping your toes in the cool seawater. Bring your own paddle board or kayak, and you can slide right in the water for a lap around Guilford Harbor or up the West River.
Take another short stroll to Barbara Pine Memorial Park, and you’ll find a secluded sand beach and astonishing views of the water.

The house is ideally located 2 hours from NYC by car (2.5 hours by train), and less than 2 miles from the town of Guilford and the local Shoreline East train station.
The historic town of Guilford offers an array of activities. Take a stroll around the town green, pop into some of the locally owned shops, or head to the Guilford Town Marina, where you’ll find multiple options for seaside dining on Long Island Sound.

Our family of five stayed here for four months. I have only wonderful things to say about this house, the town of Guilford, and our hosts, Starlet and James. The house is a mid-century retreat set in a beautiful forest. We saw deer, squirrels, and chipmunks, and enjoyed the sounds of owls and coyotes (in the distance) at night. The kitchen and main bathroom are brand new and gorgeous! The kids loved the large soaking tub, and we loved cooking meals in the perfectly appointed kitchen. It had everything we needed and then some. The three bedrooms have comfortable beds and plenty of storage. There is a spacious office and a great sunroom - we used it as a workout room. The heating and AC are new and comfortable. The hot water is endless! Again, we can only say good things! In our time in Guilford, we became friendly with the neighbors, enjoyed gorgeous walks around the shoreline (Chaffinch Island Park is a quick stroll away, as well as Barbara Pine beach.) Guilford is the cutest New England town with friendly residents, great shops and restaurants, and easy access to the 95. My husband commuted into Yale on the train which was very convenient and quick. (It’s also a quick 22-ish minute drive.) During our stay, Starlet and James were perfect hosts: very responsive to all messages, thoughtful in letting us know when to expect yard work or maintenance. The heater stopped working once and a repairman was there within a few hours to replace the filter. I recommend this house 100%!

Our visit coincided with a “once in a century” storm which caused a tree to fall on the house! We were never in danger, and because we were in constant contact with the owners, we just considered it an adventure! All else was great!

This house was an oasis of calm. In the woods and very private, yet two minutes from anything we needed. A bit of a mixup with codes when we arrived. Then addressed other’s issues with the owners. I believe the house had cats in it previously as my mother and I noticed that as we are allergic. Loved the location and setting!

The house is in a beautiful, quiet, private, woodsy setting. It's quite spacious and the central AC is great (and not something found in many rentals in the area). There's strong wifi and a good set-up for remote work. When we arrived, there was a bottle of wine waiting for us, which we appreciated, along with clear instructions about how to use the appliances, etc. Jamie answered emails quickly, which we really appreciated. However, since the owners were travelling and, it seemed, hadn't checked on the house in advance of our arrival, we wished that they had assigned that job to someone else. If they had, hopefully, that person would have noticed and fixed some small issues -- a bike w/a flat probably caused by a puncture since we couldn't pump air into it; the device used to heat water for tea, etc., being not clean enough to use; the recycling bin being pretty grungy. They also should have noticed two bigger (unappealing) issues -- that the bars of soap in the bathroom didn't seem to be new bars and that the fridge and freezer were packed w/other people's food. Having to reorganize/clean the fridge didn't seem fair. We'd also suggest that two things be clarified. One of the things we liked about the listing was that we thought it said pets are not allowed. However, previous tenants wrote that they thought cats had been in the house and we found a "cat scratch" in the dining room and had itchy eyes in one room. Plus the instructions say pets are allowed for a fee. Finally, the listing mentions a long sandy beach at Chaffinch Island Park and I'd asked if it's good for swimming. While the park truly is beautiful, the sandy beach is inaccessible (even days after the last rain) and so it's not good for swimming. Barbara Pine beach is about a mile away and was better for swimming though on one of our visits, the water was too muddy. Jacobs Beach is a short drive away and is quite nice but requires a parking pass.
