The name “Ilha da Madeira” (translated Island of Wood) is due to the luxurious and thick forests which surprised Portuguese navigators when the island was discovered.
João Gonçalves Zarco was the fearless captain of a Portuguese sea expedition along the African coast, which was driven by a big storm to an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
From this island, Zarco detected a distant black spot in the horizon which later led him to another voyage of discovery: he reached Madeira in the year 1420.

Apartment was in good location, and clean. Kitchenette is very convenient.
Listing accuracy and communication very poor. Wrong address on listing. When we showed up at that address, a very nice man explained that this person no longer owned the apartment, and directed us to the correct location. Earlier, we were sent the Aerobus schedule for transport from the airport that I had requested months before. It was an outdated schedule. When we found the bus, the driver gave us the correct schedule. I realized the address on this message was different than listed on website. I sent a message 2 days before to clarify the correct address, and never got a response. Thankfully, the kindness of the Portuguese people got us to where we needed to be. No thanks to the property owner. He got his money, and that was the end of it.
