About this house rental

This truly unique property is set into the old Walled Garden at Arniston. The house is secluded and sits by a gentle running stream which flows to the Sunken Garden. with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms it is a ideal retreat for families with pets. Due to our rural location we advise guests have their own vehicle.

Ground Floor: Entrance Hall, sitting room with open fire. Dining room with wood burning stove. Well equipped kitchen with kitchen table and large glass doors which open out on to the Walled Garden. Downstairs WC and wash hand basin. Utility room.

First Floor: 1 double bedroom with en suite shower, WC and wash hand basin. 1 twin room. 1 bunk room. Bathroom with shower over bath, WC and wash hand basin.

This was a first anniversary gift to my daughter and her husband and they had a magical time. They enjoyed peaceful walks through the estate and loved having a real fire to cosy up to. It was Doors Open day on their arrival day and they enjoyed an interesting tour of Arniston House. Many thanks to Henrietta, her mother and the staff that make Arniston such a wonderful Place to stay.

Pet friendly. Plenty of utensils in the kitchen to use. Some areas of dust dotted aroubd, namely lamp shades but otherwise clean and tify. Lovely fires in lunge and dining room. Easy to contact owner when needed and accomodated lighter duvet in main bedroom as too warm.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Gardner’s House!! Henrietta is a host that goes above and beyond for her guests. This was our first trip to Scotland to visit our son studying nearby, so it was a chilly time! The house was cozy and we loved playing cards by the fire in the parlor room. The grounds looked beautiful… we hope to come back when it is warm and we can explore! I highly recommend this vacation home for families. The 4 of us slept comfortably and there would be room for two more as there are 3 bedrooms. Thank you Henrietta and staff for making us feel so welcome!

This was the third time I’ve stayed in cottages on the Arniston estate (I have family in Gorebridge) and I wonder why anyone would want to stay any where else! Gardener’s cottage was truly lovely. We were only 2 people, but didn’t feel like we were rattling around in the place. It was genuinely like staying in a home from home: Heating was just right, WiFi was great, modern TV worked well, the kitchen was a lovely place just to have a coffee at the table and watch the world go by. Because you’re right next to the big house, the drive to and from the cottage is very grand and never fails to make you aware of where you are - in God’s country. Fabulous place. The one thing I would also add is that the owner (Henrietta) has the right balance in “Here if you need me” - information sent before, during and after your stay was timely, clear and concise. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Lovely getaway with family and friends during October holidays at this charming little gem. Sitting on the beautiful grounds of the Arniston Estate, away from hustle and bustle, yet close enough to the city of Edinburgh (we commuted by car). Accommodation itself was very spacious and had everything needed. Enjoyed the views of walled garden while having our breakfast each morning. Communication with the host before the arrival and during our stay was excellent. Thank you for making our stay so pleasant and memorable.

I really enjoyed my stay at the Gardener's Cottage. It was clean, comfortable, and quiet. There is a lot to see and do in close proximity to the property, and about a 30 minute drive to Edinburgh.

Stayed here for work near Edinburgh Centre. Would rather stay outside of the City, this is a great place to stay. Everything you could wish for. Very peaceful and beautiful location. We have stayed in the cottages on the estate and they are really cosy just what you would like a cottage to be. Gardener's House is set away from these and is a bit grander, but just as cosy.

Interior of house was modern and a good fit for our family of 6. Kids enjoyed exploring the grounds and area around Arniston house. Few minutes our of town so close enough if you for needs in town but a very good country feel. Good communication even as plans changed due to airline issues.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Gardner's House on the Armiston House Estate. The history of this house/estate is incredible. A few "quirks" just added to the personality of the home which was very comfortable. Watching the sheep graze in the pasture outside the kitchen, exploring the acres of the private estate and the stream which runs just behind the "cottage." Henrietta was lovely and stopped in to make sure everything was to our liking. Location within 1.5 miles of train station was perfect (free parking a bonus). Had we stayed longer, we would have taken greater advantage of the train and gone back into Edinburgh. 1 1/2 hours to St. Andrews. Having a washing machine was a bonus and the drying rack worked out beautifully. Would love to return and would highly recommend to anyone looking for something outside of the hustle of the city.

A Restorative Stay

We enjoyed a long stay at the Gardener's Cottage, seeking a rural break and some time to unwind after an intensely busy period in our lives. All of our wishes were fulfilled. We had a tranquil stay....and loved everything; the trees, the walled garden, the stream and the prolific birdlife. Our Bengal cats stayed with us and had a marvellous time exploring the garden. It was a beautiful settling for a birthday celebration; a warm and hospitable space. The open fire and supply of wood kept us cosy and entranced. Henrietta was a brilliant, experienced host, and we thank her! We would definitely stay again, should the occasion arise.

We love this house and feel at home but this time we did note that the double bed was very uncomfortable and there were one or two minor things which needed attention. It is our second visit and we will return. Watching the birds and squirrels in the garden was great and exploring the estate with the dog was wonderful. Arniston is so tranquil. Would have appreciated a king size bed which didn’t creak every time we moved!

Was blown away as we drove up to Gardeners House, Arniston Estate is impressive, but Gardeners House is like a secret garden all on its own. What a fantastic house, so cosy and comfortable - with every detail thought of, even down to provision of hot water bottles in case you need them ! Simply amazing escape that I didn’t want to leave. We all enjoyed our stay at Gardener's House. The house is so charming and well equipped. It is also very comfortable and it is evident that much careful thought has gone into the tiniest of details to make this a real home from home. Having the freedom to roam the surrounding beautiful grounds is a real bonus and our dog enjoyed many walks and playing ball. The house itself is tucked away amongst trees. It is very private and has a lovely patio and outdoor dining area that is not overlooked. We were lucky with the weather and were able to use this a lot. Another considerate aspect is that logs, kindling and matches are provided so we could settle in front of a lovely fire come evening. Maybe I shouldn't say but we all agreed that the accommodation was terrific value - perhaps even underpriced! Midlothian has so many beautiful sights and is so close to Edinburgh itself. If you want a rural idyll but within an easy of drive of Scotland's capitol city, we cannot recommend this enough. We so look forward to returning in the future.

The cottage is situated in an excellent location with plenty of amenities close by. The estate owner Henrietta is very helpful and on hand if needed the cottage and the estate are extremely dog friendly with a fenced of garden. Good links to coastal attractions and links to Edinburgh. The cottage is comfortable clean and well equipped. The estate roads are good and there is good parking outside the cottage. We will certainly return in the future

Wonderfully located property. The house is placed in the corner of the estate with its own garden and access to the blocked off walled garden (which is huge). Access to the estate for walks was a real bonus. Those with a dog will love the grounds, with very well maintained paths. Loads of space within the cottage too with lots of info and detail in regards to the local area and property amenities. A few small gripes however. Property could do with a deep clean. Main surfaces and floors cleaned but corners of rooms had cobwebs, fridge top had a layer of dirt / dust as an example. A couple of items need replacing or fixing. Cooker extractor does not work, the back door to the courtyard lock is very stiff and difficult to open and close. A few plates and glasses also chipped that need to be replaced. A small welcome pack of milk, bread and butter would have been a great touch, especially as some people travel a long distance to the property and don't particularly want to go shopping immediately after they arrive and unpack. A few extra dishwasher tablets and extra bin bags especially would have been helpful. Overall, a great family sized property with amazing stately feel surroundings. Just needs a little tlc in places.

All the arrangements for our stay were well organised and straightforward. The cottage is full of character with a great location although some occasional traffic noise. While all the facilities you would expect were in place, the cottage was starting to feel a little worn and in need of a little tlc to justify cost.

Our Week at Gardener's Cottage

We had a lovely week at Gardener's Cottage as the location is ideal for a relaxed vacation with walks on the Arniston Estate. It was lovely to have an open fire and the logs were provided. The cottage is very comfortable and spacious with a garden to sit out in and observe the sheep. It is also very conveniently located for trips to Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders and not forgetting nearby golf courses. Gorebridge, the local town, provides takeaways and McColls for your culinary essentials. We took advantage of the Arniston House tours where Althea and Henny provide an interesting insight into their family ancestry and the history of the house. We had a day out in The Kingdom of Fife (1.5 hours away but well worth it) where we visited St Andrews, St Monans, Pittenweem and Elie. I would highly recommend a trip to this area as it is on a beautiful coastline with stunning seafood restaurants. We ate at The Smokehouse in St Monans where we had the most wonderful lobster. Need to book beforehand. Can't wait to come back to the Arniston Estate! NB. coronavirus rules rigidly adhered to!!

Gardener's House is perfect for a relaxing break. It is surrounded by many lovely and varied walks literally on your doorstep, brilliant for nature lovers. The house is cosy and well equipped. It is also ideal for dog lovers with a large safely enclosed garden. Henrietta the owner is extremely helpful and thoughtful. Additionally she has established an efficient and reassuring C-19 regime in this challenging time.
