About this house rental
Tucked away near the Cromwell Heritage Precinct, and less than 200m from the banks of the stunning Kawerau River sits a modern, three-bedroom home with breathtaking mountain views. Two minutes from the fabulous new Te Puna Mahara/Cromwell Memorial Arts Centre. Welcome to the Kawerau River Retreat!
Take your pick from several living spaces, both indoors and out, here at the Kawerau River Retreat. They’re all styled for comfort, and waiting for you to arrive, drop your bags, and relax.
The open-plan indoor living-dining space features an L-shaped couch perfect for putting your feet up with a good book, turning on the Smart TV to catch up on that show everyone’s been talking about, or posting some of your holiday pics using the free WIFI. Stay cosy and warm by the gas fireplace on those winter getaways, and come summertime, open the doors or turn the heat pump nice and low to stay cool.
Prepare a feast in the well-equipped kitchen while still being part of the conversation. Or why not spark up the BBQ and take dinner alfresco out on the back patio, enjoying a glass of Central Otago Pinot Noir while the dishwasher takes care of the clean up.
With three separate outdoor living spaces, there’s always somewhere to breath in the fresh mountain air no matter the time of day. Lay back on the sun lounger, take shade under the umbrella, or bring along a petanque set and challenge each other to a match on the grass.
At the end of the day, recharge the batteries in one of the three bedrooms here at Kawerau River Retreat. With queen bed and single bed options, there’s a configuration to suit everyone. Three bathrooms, including one with a tub, offer ample conveniences for everyone as well.
Kawerau River Retreat is in a fantastic location to enjoy everything Cromwell has to offer. If a road trip brings you here, make sure to bring the bikes to enjoy the trails and get about town on two wheels - you can store them overnight in the garage!
A five-minute stroll from Kawerau River Retreat you’ll find the Cromwell Heritage Precinct with it’s shops, eateries, and historical charm, and why not take the riverside trail back home afterwards. For more modern conveniences, you’ll find a supermarket, pharmacy, and more shops and eateries in Cromwell town, less than five-minutes drive away.
For adventures further afield, it’s less than an hour to Queenstown and Wanaka, and only 55-minutes to the Cardrona Alpine Resort.

The main accommodation is fantastic: very stylish; high-spec; a lovely open-plan lounge/dining/kitchen area; and very comfortable beds. We also made good use of the very generous laundry facilities. There were a few negatives however. Firstly, we were greeted with several over-flowing domestic bins. Two of these related to the properties on the same site, which I'm sure are also looked after by Bachcare. Yet when we stayed at other baches around NZ bins had always been completely emptied prior to the next person's stay. I did also point out to Bachcare that the bin collection day was left blank in the welcome pack. Secondly there was an annoying bleeping sound in the unit which after a couple of days we worked out was coming from the wine fridge. Third there was quite a lot of noise in the area. This was mainly from the building work on a new community centre across the road, but we also had to endure a rave one night which didn't stop until 4am. Finally the outdoor furniture was rather poor, and due to the orientation of the unit and surrounding properties there was little opportunity to sit in the sunshine. Overall I'd just about recommend the place but wouldn't return.
