Popham has a unique history of having the first English settlement established in 1607. Several archaeological digs confirmed the site of Fort St George the 1607 English colony. This property was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years and were here when the English arrived in 1607. The town of Phippsburg has several hiking trails close by most of which are maintained by the town.
