About this house rental

Built in 1924, Idlewood has maintained its original charm and grace for almost 100 years. This 5 bedroom 3 bath natural wood house was recently updated with HVAC, updated kitchen, and a general facelift. The large living room with stone fireplace is the perfect place to enjoy friends and family...or retreat to the peaceful covered porch with rocking chairs, porch swings, and a view of lookout mountain. A large backyard is perfect for grilling, corn hole, or even an outdoor movie night. Located in the center of Montreat, Idlewood is an easy 3-5 minute walk to Lake Susan, tennis courts, the barn, and dozens of hiking trails.

Location - Idlewood is centrally located in Montreat. We are walking distance to everything in Montreat (tennis, Lake Susan, Robert Lake Park, etc), a 5 minute drive to Black Mountain town center, and a 20 minute drive to downtown Asheville and Biltmore.

Features - Updated in 2020, this air conditioned home features wonderful outdoor spaces, antiques, comfortable sleeping areas, an updated kitchen, hardwood floors, wood walls and ceilings a 100 year old stone fireplace, and is located in the ideal Montreat location.

Main Floor - The main floor includes a fabulous peaceful covered porch with 2 porch swings, a spacious living room with stone fireplace, flanked by 4 bedrooms (2 king, 2 queen/twin) and 2 bathrooms and outdoor patio with comfortable seating.

Ground Floor - Kitchen, Dining room, bunk room with trundle and bathroom/laundry room combo. Off the dining room is a patio for grilling and outdoor space for family fun.

Located within walking distance to all of the Montreat attractions and inside the Conference Center area, Idlewood is less than a 5 minute walk to Lake Susan, 5 minute drive to Black Mountain, and 20 minute drive to Asheville.

This is a charming, well loved home that easily accommodated the 11 of us. This is one of the best appointed kitchens to meet the needs of almost anyone who spends time in the kitchen. These owners are generous in their supply of paper products and kitchen needs. Very impressive. Almost everything has been thought of by these owners. The comfortable living room and large dining table was a hit with all and the general neighborhood is very special. Wonderful playground and cafe and a couple of shops in walking distance and nice hikes nearby in Montreat. Named correctly...a cozy and fun place!!

It was a great place for 3 generations to be together for the Memorial Day long weekend! The layout of the house including a great Montreat porch and a backyard fire pit for somemores went to making a lot of memories with grandchildren! As one of the 4year old olds exclaimed, “it was cozy!”

Loved our stay at Idlewood. The house was extremely clean and kitchen was as well equipped as we have seen at any rental. Location is great with easy access to trails and Montreat amenities, and a short drive to downtown Black Mountain. We enjoyed the area over New Years and are looking forward to trying it out for a summer stay.

We had a fun time… 8 girls keeping the Montreat tradition alive! We had hoped linens and towels were included- they take up lots of packing space, but we read at the last minute we needed to pack ours. Nice, cozy house. The downstairs kitchen seemed a little funky, but we made it work! The upstairs porch was covered in leaves, but that must not have bothered us too badly, because we didn’t use the blower! Overall very nice, with parking being a little tricky!

What a cozy spot to spend the weekend with family! From the doors to the porch swings to the fire place there is so much antique charm to appreciate and enjoy. We stayed here for a weekend in January. The house is charmingly vintage. The kitchen was well equipped and you could tell someone who loves to cook and bake stays here often. They even had coffee and hot cocoa for us AND s’mores sticks. There was enough seating in the living room for everyone in our group. It’s a very short walk to the Montreat conference center/Inn and stores. The kitchen is downstairs away from the bedrooms and living space which may present an obstacle to those who have a hard time going up and down stairs. The seemingly new tvs in each room were a plus. We hope to stay there again! It’s also a very short drive to Blavk Mountain.

Charming and cozy mountain cabin with a very well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds great bedroom arrangement for a small family gathering. As noted before, the driveway is steep but is short and presented no problems. Probably would be a challenge in snow or ice but you can park at the top of the drive. Downstairs kitchen and dining room are cool in cold weather but space heaters have been provided. Great location for walking to the park or Lake Susan and lots of hiking trails near by.

Just as listed! Spacious with very comfortable beds and everything we needed in the kitchen. Great stash of games and we enjoyed the fireplace on a cool evening. The beds are so comfortable and we gravitated to the upstairs porch and had lunches on the patio. The kitchen is very well quipped. I hate to admit that we didn't spend much time at either dining table or in the living room. We just loved the way the outdoor setting allowed us options. Thank you for sharing your home. We spent a week at Idlewood with the kids (4 and 7) and grandparents, for an end of summer family vacation. It was our first time in Montreat and it is a special place. We enjoyed fantastic hiking (plenty of nearby easy trails), creeks, beautiful homes, and with Black Mountain and Ashville close by, there were great options for activities and food. The Western Nature Center was fantastic with kids, and Louise's Kitchen in Black Mountain was our favorite brunch spot. The house has a great feel, and is more spacious than I thought it would be. It is a perfect floorplan for a group with the separate bedroom wings. Idlewood was very well stocked in terms of kitchen (spices, condiments, oil, etc.) and bathrooms. The beds were so comfortable. We loved the cottage's character, and all of the modern amenities. I will echo what other reviews have said - the driveway is very steep (the house is set downhill from the road) and made of gravel and it presented a challenge for my SUV. We ended up parking at the street-level spot and walking (very carefully) down the drive for most of the week. All in all, we loved our stay and hope to come back again in the future.

My family stayed at this property for my father's 70th birthday celebration. The house provided an incredibly cozy, relaxing atmosphere. There was a winter storm for the majority of our visit, so we spent the weekend happily tucked in around the fire playing board games. The kitchen was well stoked. We baked a cake and made two large dinners. The beds were very comfortable. My only caution is (like most mountain homes) the driveway is steep and narrow at the top. Take care when pulling in. Thanks to the accommodating hostess for a fabulous weekend full of fond memories!

This is a great location. The hosts are responsive and accommodating. I found it odd that we had to rent sheets and towels, and then pay extra to have the beds made. Appliances are all new, and lots of supplies in the kitchen and firewood. New TVs and washer/dryer. Home is very old and could use some repairs (some doors don't close properly, need another space heater for downstairs).

We had a lovely time at this very cute and rustic cabin. It slept 12 comfortably with 2 families each having their own space. It had all the amenities you could think of with a VERY well stocked kitchen including a homemade ice cream maker. Montreat is a beautiful area and very family friendly. We enjoyed the stay, there was plenty of room for all of us, and it was very charming. The kitchen was well supplied with everything you need. The outdoor fire made for a nice evening of roasting marshmallows and enjoying the yard. The driveway was very steep and a little difficult after rain.

My female family members (sister, mothers, cousins, aunt) get together each fall at a different location and chose Black Mtn. this year. The property was perfect for us. The kitchen was amazingly stocked and there was plenty of seating in all living spaces to accommodate our group. There IS construction happening right next door currently which caused a bit of distracting noise first thing in the mornings, but that will hopefully be temporary!

Idlewood is a lovely cabin with history!! The cabin is historic and has been updated with modern amenities. We loved the vintage cabin feel!! We rent on VRBO often and this is by far the most well-stocked house we have ever found. While that is not necessary, it was certainly very nice! Located in beautiful Montreat, it is also very close to downtown Black Mountain and an easy drive to Asheville. Be on the look out for wildlife. We spotted a pie-bald deer which was an unexpected treat!

I had a wonderful stay at this charming Montreat cottage. I had some girlfriends come up and stay. We had a great time cooking in the fully stocked kitchen. ( It was so nice to have spices, paper products and other kitchen necessities provided!). We enjoyed playing different games of the owner’s supplied.The numerous outdoor seating areas were also a welcome asset. I highly recommend this home. You won’t be disappointed!

We absolutely loved staying here! The dart board and board games were highlights for our elementary aged kids and us adults spent as much time as we could on that charming porch. The swinging benches were nap-worthy, the strung white lights added such a fun vibe. We also loved the fire pit area with its own set of strung cafe lights. All of the little details were provided (started pack of firewood if needed, toilet paper/paper towels, coffee, and even laundry detergent. That was so helpful. The owners were so kind and easy to communicate with (and kind...my son accidentally broke one of their lovely walking sticks and I was so grateful for the owners' graciousness when I told them about it.). This place is delightful and we have recommended it to several friends already.

My family and I really enjoyed our stay in Montreat at Margaret’s lovely mountain cottage. There was so much character in this home and tons of sleeping and seating space for everyone. It was a pleasant surprise to see how close we were to Black Mountain shopping and only a 20 min drive to downtown Asheville. One of our favorite parts was walking down to Lake Susan at sunset and getting some great family photos! There was construction next door that was a little noisy and trucks were blocking the driveway and on street parking. The workers were very accommodating in moving their vehicles so that everyone could park appropriately. Margaret was very good in communicating before/during/after the stay. I would totally stay here again and recommend to others!

We had a great weekend at the cabin. We had plenty of room and it was stocked so well. We set around the fireplace outside on Friday night and loved it. The next night we made a fire inside and played cards. I absolutely loved the covered porch upstairs. I could have stayed there all weekend. So peaceful. Would certainly pick this place again. I am jealous of whoever gets it next weekend.
