Merkendorf—the gateway to the Franconian Lake District The romantic town of Merkendorf (population 3,000, 435 m above sea level) was likely founded in the 9th or 10th century and was granted town rights by King Wenceslas in 1398. Today, Merkendorf is a modern small town with excellent infrastructure and a pleasant quality of life, where there is always something new to discover against a backdrop rich in tradition. Within the medieval city walls dating from the 14th century—featuring eight towers, three city gates, and a moat—historic buildings, lovingly designed facades, and picturesque alleys define the townscape. Particular gems include the late-Gothic town church and the Steingruberhaus with its Baroque garden, as well as the 15th-century town hall, where Emperor Maximilian I was received in 1506. On the forecourt, the Krautbrunnen fountain commemorates the town’s heyday as the “Krautstadt” (Cabbage Town). Dedicated hosts offer you every comfort and Franconian hospitality.
