It was actually a really comfortable hostel with minor exceptions. It was a pleasant old building on an attractive residential street. Check-in/out was well explained, entirely self-managed and extremely easy. Staying there felt like going back in time as a tenant in an old-fashioned boarding facility; just inside the heavy wooden door and a beautiful (albeit noisy) old wooden banister and staircase leading to the upper floors. Each floor was small with only a few units and a generously-sized bathroom. The rooms were simple but serviceable with a comfortable bed and a large desk, and the high ceilings and greenery outside made them seem much more spacious. Our bathroom on the first floor had plenty of natural light, paper towels, quality toilet paper, and a shelf above the sink. The shower head was adjustable and the water temperature and pressure were both great. The kitchen was a particularly nice feature. There was a full fridge, stove-top, dishwasher, a table large enough to comfortably seat eight, and well-stocked cabinets with quality dishware. The location was excellent, with a Penny supermarket within a 5 minute walk, and the historical downtown accessible by foot in just ten minutes. It was only about 8 minutes from the Train station. The building was usually quiet during the day when most guests were away. I was at the back of the building but I heard no traffic noise from the street, and there were no raucous parties or moderately active events in the well-kept yard area; just the occasional conversation.
The walls are, as others have said, like paper for audio insulation. If you or a neighbor make a phone call, you may as well be on the line together. If anyone talks in the hall or climbs the stair, you will hear every syllable and creak. That being said, there are only two or three rooms to a floor and most guests are out during the day, during which time the building is extremely quiet. Noises are generally a passing inconvenience. The first floor shower was a daily ordeal. It did not drain, and also did not have any barrier to prevent the water going everywhere. The backlog threatened to spillover within half a minute, and the shower head itself sprayed into the bathroom no matter which way you aimed it. Showering entailed a series of ~30 second bursts interspersed with waiting on the drain, and a mop up session afterward. This would have been much more unpleasant in winter. I dearly wish they'd address the drain issue and install a door or curtain, or at the very least leave a mop handy. The oven does not work. I left something in for 45 minutes on 280* and when I returned it was still only lukewarm. Thank goodness the microwave and stove were functional. I am not sure how often the bathrooms are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. They appeared fresh when I arrived, but deteriorated a bit over my tenure. The mirror of the first floor bathroom was quite high off the ground, and the large basin sink set it at a distance. This made it useless to show anything up close or below the neckline in my case, and shorter people may not be able to utilize it at all. The kitchen trash was inadequately marked, with the exception of the yellow bin. I don't think there was any place for compostables, and how to sort the rest between the two remaining bins was a guessing game. Wishlist items, in descending order: - wall hooks in bedrooms - larger dinner bowls and some tupperware for leftovers - mirror - luggage rack
