Matira house

Very clean, new comfortable, one bedroom unit for a good price, especially considering the excellent location. Within walking distance of a beautiful public beach and next door to a resort that allows day-use with food and drink, also with a great beach on the other side of the peninsula. The bed is large, firm, a fridge and a kettle are provided. The unit is separate from the main house and other rental rooms. Their car rental recommendation, Heitaki Bora Rental Cars was truly great, extremely convenient, with the car being dropped off and picked up at Matira house. The car rental rep was very responsive over e-mail, and a pleasure to deal with in person.

The unit is advertised as a house, which implies some kitchen facilities. The unit is separate, but is set up more like a hotel room with a private bathroom than an actual house. The management could be more pleasant. When asked about a hair dryer, I was basically told that because of the humidity they don't use it, and therefore I don't need to either. The dryer was not provided. They do rent cars and mopeds here. We were asked to wait until the end of the day to see if their regular renter will rent it before making it available to us. They rented it out to them, but while we waited other rentals were being taken last minute. Thankfully they did recommend a great local rental place, but it only had only the expensive electric car left. Communication with the owners leaves something to be desired. It seems they would prefer to communicate over WhatsApp from 10 metres away, rather than in person. Over WhatsApp, some of your questions will get answered right away, some not at all and you will have to ask in person. If you do, it seems you are bothering them, even if they are outside in the evening. If you pass by their windows to get to your entrance, they close them immediately. We understand and appreciate privacy, though if you set up a rental unit right outside your window, and want to rent cars to your guests, you may need to give up some of it, and actually interact with them. Nor do they see the need to teach their children how to say hello in any language, and who just stare if you do. These may be some cultural and generational differences, but they did make the stay less pleasant. Contrary to the owner's claims, the neighbourhood dogs did harass us at night coming back to the room, were roaming about unleashed, and their owners were in no hurry to call them back. Every family in French Polynesia needs dogs, the more and the bigger, the better.

The property was great we slept very well. The bathroom was very clean, and the host was lovely. I would definitely recommend staying at Matira House.

Very little to like, except that it is near Matira Beach. The reason I booked this place (and I suspect others do it too) is because the internet told me that Matira beach is incredible and "one of the best beaches in the word". Well, that's not true, of course, and the beach, although good is nothing special. The reason why it's spoken of so highly online is because it's the ONLY public beach on the whole island. Positives : - near Matira beach - hot water in the outdoor shower room - wifi was good in the room.

- The property was originally a single story house and the upper part (with 2 guest rooms) was added on later and made totally of wood. The walls, etc are all plywood, which means I could hear the person in the other room snoring. - no cooking facility at all. - there are bikes available for free use, but when I asked the owner about the bike lock, she said "I'll text you the code for the lock", which I didn't understand as we were literally standing next to the bikes at the time. I never received the code, so never used the bikes. - one time, I was coming out of the bathroom, and saw a guy emerging from the host kitchen (I assume he was the partner of the lady owner), so I smiled and said 'Hi'. He looked at me, and looked away, Nice. Good job making your paying guests feel unwanted. I would have extended my stay if I didn't feel like an inconvenience to the hosts. Over-priced. Sadly, Bora Bora has very limited accommodation options, so poor quality properties, with poor quality service can get away with things like this.
