Casa Dos Barcos Furnas

I was visiting Sao Miguel island with my 3 boys ranging in age from 14 to 24 years old and I am so happy we picked Casa dos Barcos as a place to stay in Furnas. Such an amazing property and such a unique experience. The hosts: super responsive, very generous, very welcoming: our check in and check out were very seamless. The house is located near the entrance to Mata Jardim Jose do Canto, Sylvia who minds the park met us when we arrived and showed us around the house and the surrounding property. Parking in the private spot on the property. We had a welcome basket waiting for us in the kitchen. When staying in this property, you have private access (before and after hours the park is open to public) and you have access to bicycles and kayaks that you are welcome to use. Location: it is an easy drive from the PDL airport (about 40 min). A 10 min easy drive to town of Furnas or nearby beaches with plenty of things to see and do, restaurants and grocery shops. It is located in the gated area on lake Furnas . The property: beautifully and freshly renovated without losing the charm of the history in it. Fully equipped for the most comfortable stay. 2 bedrooms, a family room on the upper level with a sleeper couch, beautiful living room and dining room on the lower level. Laundry room with washer and dryer, fully equipped kitchen. After hours, when the park quieted down, the peacocks paid us a visit. Everything about our stay here was beyond any and all expectations. Would absolutely recommend this property to friends and family and would absolutely stay here again.

We had an absolutely incredible stay at Casa dos Barcos das Furnas. The house is in a truly stunning location right on the lake, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our trip to São Miguel. The home has clearly been very recently and thoughtfully renovated. It perfectly balances modern comfort with the historic character of the property. The downstairs ceilings are impressively tall — around 12 feet — which makes the space feel open, bright, and luxurious without losing its cozy atmosphere. The windows are enormous and absolutely breathtaking, bringing the outdoors inside and giving beautiful views of the lake and surrounding greenery throughout the day. On misty Furnas mornings especially, the atmosphere was unforgettable. The location was perfect for us. We were within about an hour’s drive of almost anywhere on the island, which made exploring São Miguel very easy while still being able to come back each evening to a peaceful and relaxing setting. Furnas itself is only a short drive away, making it easy to walk around town, eat at restaurants, or visit the thermal baths whenever we wanted. Seeing the fumaroles steaming across the lake from the property was such a uniquely Azorean experience and added so much character to the setting. Everything was spotless, comfortable, and very well maintained. The property felt peaceful and secluded while still being a perfect base for exploring the island. During the day there is a fair amount of foot traffic along the nearby road and walking paths, but it never felt intrusive or bothersome. At night, however, the area becomes incredibly quiet and secluded — exactly the relaxing atmosphere we were hoping for. We loved returning each evening after hiking and sightseeing to relax by the water and enjoy the calm surroundings. The kayaks were also a fantastic addition and made the stay even more memorable. Honestly, we really did not have any significant complaints about the property. The only minor thing worth mentioning is that during the daytime there can be a fair amount of foot traffic along the nearby road and walking paths because the lake area is popular with visitors. That said, it was never especially noisy or disruptive, and by evening the area becomes extremely quiet and secluded. For us, the peaceful atmosphere at night far outweighed the occasional daytime activity. Even at peak times it is far quieter than a city based hotel or accomodation.

Its a historic gem 170 y.o. house in the coolest area. Of all my travels around the world and a lot of times to acores it was the coolest place i ever stayed. You feel like in a movie. The crazy windows and high ceiling is a dream. The only downside is you need to know how to live in a old building next to water. I own one too so i know. In winter put one or more ac to heating a little and put one ac to demoisture or use the demoisture device. It will remove the water from the air that comes naturally from stone walls next to the water. After 1-2 days it will be nice. They had to build the lake houses like that 170 years ago. In summer the ac will demoisture anyway.

Look.... the location is obviously stunning; I had the whole house to myself (solo traveler) and the kayaks and bikes were a great addition. I guarantee you'll be the only person(s) kayaking on the lagoa if you rent this place...cuz I was...😊

It was moldy inside - it may have just been fumigated, as there was a chemical smell upon arrival that lasted almost all three days. Ants were in the bedroom, kitchen and bathroom after two nights, even though all I ate in the house was cheese and crackers, spilling no crumbs. It's fairly rundown. There's not a lot of maintenance occuring on this place. There is not as much privacy as you think - the gardener/caretaker and cleaning lady were in and out of the basement, coming in and out of the gate. People were constantly walking by...one flew her drone right by the rear (private side) windows when I was partially dressed. The air conditioning DID NOT WORK. The remotes to the A/C did not work. I put the screens in the windows. Mosquitos and gnats got in and I had numerous bites in a.m. Seriously, put one USB port in a few rooms - it's a very inexpensive upgrade. It was a unique experience; a 6 means I enjoyed it. I would not stay again - I'm glad the people I invited to join me were unable to make it, as it would have been embarrassingly shoddy...
