I liked absolutely everything about my stay. Okami and her husband are exceptional hosts—so kind and welcoming throughout the entire experience. It was a truly authentic experience to stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan. Okami prepared a fantastic breakfast, and even gave me snacks for the road, which I found incredibly thoughtful and cute. I highly recommend staying here in Kyoto if you’re looking for an authentic experience and are happy to respect their home and culture.

+ The hosts were incredibly kind, warm and caring. We felt like we were visiting our (newly found) Japanese grandparents. Every interaction felt very personal and genuine and the hosts devote a lot of time and effort to their guests. + The hosts were incredibly helpful too. They provided many helpful recommendations that made our Kyoto stay truly unforgettable! Every recommendation, from a traditional knife shop to a Kaiseki restaurant, were a highlight of our trip. We would not nearly have found as many enjoyable and authentic experiences without their help! Thank you!! + The breakfast is incredible. If you like Japanese food you are in for a treat, and make sure you are hungry! Okami-San would wake up a couple of hours before us to prepare an Obansai breakfast with many many small unique dishes. And it’s different every day! This was a culinary highlight of our trip. We stayed at two five star hotels after this and the breakfast was far from being comparable. It’s really THAT GOOOOOOD. And it’s all homemade too! Thank you Okami-San for the unforgettable experience. + Through this stay we felt like we were able to get a glimpse of the traditional Japanese lifestyle and customs. Something we experienced as hard to find elsewhere. Thank you again to Kamuroan for providing this rare experience to their guests. + The two people room is quite large, with two subrooms. + Desoite the fact that traditional Japanese rooms let little outdoor light in, the indoor lighting is excellent and its warmth and intensity can be adjusted at will. + Cleaning was always impeccable in the room and throughout the house. + There is the opportunity to take a very relaxing soapy bath in the evenings, in a tub with integrated heating system that keeps the water at perfect temperature for hours. This kind of technology is new for us westerners and honestly, we are missing out. This was so relaxing! + Everything was great by every metric. A true highlight. We will come again as soon as we can!

Nothing. I would only emphasise for prospective guests: Before booking a stay, make sure you are comfortable staying in another person’s home, albeit with the best possible host experience you could think of.

I was really keen to do a traditional ryokan stay while in Kyoto and I’m so glad I chose Kamuroan. Once you take a bit of time to read about the guidance on how the stay differs from a more western style hotel I felt totally comfortable. As a solo traveller it was really nice to have that home feel and I slept incredibly well as the area is very quiet and peaceful. I was very well looked after by Okami-san and her partner and fed beautifully in the morning with a very generous spread. I really enjoyed chatting to Okami and it was great to try the traditional yakata kimono around the house. Thank you for having me ☺️

It was an interesting and unique experience. As Okami, the lovely host, emphasises, this is not a hotel. It's her house and quite rightly, she cares about it. The breakfast was truly different, substantial and very tasty.

Kamuroan gets rave reviews, but for us, we found the atmosphere too prescriptive, and our hosts just a bit too attentive.
