Okay but wouldn’t go back.

The hotel is very welcoming - well lit and staff were pleasant. The jacuzzi in our bathroom was great and there was a welcome basket of goodies in the room.

Well, firstly, there was a painting that I thought was attached to the wall but wasn’t - it was leant up against the back of the chair I sat down on and fell on me. It was a heavy frame which gave me a shock and a bump on the head. The room was nice but it needing updating. The toiletries were a tiny bar of soap, some shower gel in a broken dispenser and a couple of toothbrushes. The duvet cover was super king size but the duvet inside was a double that barely covered the top of the bed and was all at one side of the cover so we had to spend some time getting to lay in the centre. The meal in the restaurant was odd - some well cooked elements but then the Camembert came with one slice of white sliced toast and the bowl of olives that cost £4 were pitted black olives that had been stored in brine and were chopped into tiny pieces. It’s like they focused their attention on getting some things in the hotel done well and then cut corners with the rest. We paid £176 for a one night stay and I’d say that wasn’t great value for money given the cost cutting it was clear they did.

Staff were nice and helpful

Old, tired, peeling wall paper, beds were old hard spring mattresses very uncomfortable. Breakfast was very poor one small sausage, and 1 rasher of bacon.

Tired but great staff making the most of it.

Location good for Appledore and Instow.

Very tired, don’t mind a bit of Faulty Towers, but the bed springs are in your back and Television not working all fittings are very old. Draughty entrance and a very tired Bar. Not great and not somewhere we would go back to.

Only had breakfast and it was very good. Full English was exceptionally good.

I asked for none diary milk which they got for be with no issues which was excellent but it might be nice to have it out for guests. But staff were very happy to get it for us.

Comfy and friendly, but needs a little TLC

Staff were more than friendly especially the breakfast staff, but the bar lady and the reception staff were great too. Breakfast was yummy. Room was big and comfortable. Clean and perfect for my daughter and I.

Window was drafty around the edges, the bathroom light pull felt clunky and we worried turning the switch on and off each time, and the room door did not lock from the inside, the catch just went round and round. It's just a bit of maintenance, really. The communal areas, bar and restaurant were great.

Quite pretty. The lady on the check in desk was very friendly and helpful.

I think it used to be very grand in its day but is stating to look run down The staff at breakfast were all incredibly rude and had no people skills. This alone will stop me from booking here again

Disappointing.

It’s an attractive looking property and conveniently positioned to the town and beaches.

The lift is ridiculously old and slower than a Shanna’s Stair lift ! My room was uncomfortably hot and I had to open the windows onto a noisy road. The toilet moved every time it was sat on. The lamp switch didn’t work properly.

Loved it ....

Great location, car park and bus stop for Appledore and Bideford and Barnstaple. Beautiful frontage and gardens. Nice bar and reception and although we didn't try it the food looked great. Outdoor pool. Little Gym. We were upgraded to a nice big but quite dated room. Comfy bed. Room very clean with daily housekeeping. Reception very helpful. Felt safe.

The room was a bit jaded and a mish mash furniture wise. Old thick hard to pull curtains. Bedside light and switch nowhere near the ....bed! There was a unusable, rather grand, fake fireplace...it was a sight to behold! But it really did have a homely feel!

Traditional gem

The staff are exceptionally friendly here, from Antony on reception to the lovely breakfast ladies. We loved the old school decor and wood; felt like an episode of Poirot. Pet friendly. Great beaches nearby. Enjoyed Bideford for shopping and eating out and Woolacombe for a relaxing sand day. Pool is lovely. Entertainment on regularly. Exeter is also worth a day trip.

Old and worn out with not very pleasant smell

Everything the hotel was dated and needed a refurb and a good clean when we opened the door to our room the room stank horrible and instantly saw mucky net curtains the owner end ball flew off when I closed the curtains luckily it didn’t hit anyone it was very basic it cost 131 pound a night with my two little dogs which I don’t think is worth it wouldn’t stay again

I understand what may have caused this procedure but it is very unusual to pay for a meal at ordering rather than presenting a bill at the end as normal (imo) I have no worries about putting an advance up to pay for meals or drinks. This had the potential for staff customer clashes. John Cook

Beautiful old hotel, full of charm and friendliness

Beautiful old hotel- full of charm. Our room was beautiful, with rose petals on the bed and double jacuzzi bath. Food was gorgeous and staff were really friendly and helpful. There was a sheet in our room asking for maintenance pointers of things that needed attention in the room. I filled this in on our second day and went out- when we returned all the little things were fixed. Staff gave us recommendations for places to eat and called us taxis when required. It’s a good base for seeing north Devon. Westward Ho! Is a gem!

We didn’t find it an issue but the hotel appears to cater for coach trips but these were served in the ballroom.

An excellent stay.

I Was given room 242 I had very comfortable bed, very clean and spacious room, good view to the river and bridge. Breakfast was brilliant plenty of choice to cater for all. I have severe allergy to dairy and managed to eat well with no fuss. I travelled with my two brothers and we had excellent evening meals, with fresh veg. There was plenty of seating areas for us to meet up and chat. The staff were very helpful and friendly. there was also plenty of parking. A hotel with a lovely atmosphere.

I honestly can't find fault and I am regular traveller to the London and other UK area hotels.

Carnival weekend

My room was large with double bed and a sofa. Nice bathroom with strong shower Good choice at breakfast. Nice bar serving light meals. Swimming pool (weather wasn't good). Friendly and helpful staff

Summer duvet on bed wasn't warm enough but was changed for a winter duvet. Radiator and phone in room didn't work. Window was very small so room was a bit dark Some fresh fruit at breakfast would have been nice, only tinned grapefruit and prunes available

Everything - it was very dark, everything was grubby and needed a good clean, also needed maintenance work and some money spent on the property to bring it up to standard. Some of the staff were miserable and rude.

The pool

When I politely asked if there was a bar by the pool the man behind reception answer was "this isn't ibiza "! Rude I thought ! The room was disgusting paper coming off walls on all the walls broken lamp shades different colour tiles in bathroom could not change temperature of shower to boiling hot no plug socket near a mirror dirty fridge when we complained on our return home (we were there for our sisters wake ) so didn't complain at the time we were grieving.the management mor or less said in a email TOUGH as you didn't complain at the time Tea and coffee not replaced evan tough we did ask at reception for this to be done.. breakfast was all cheap produce will not stay again !!!

Reasonable quality for the price and rating.

Location close to Appledore and Westward Ho. Staff were helpful in the main. The young lady and young man serving breakfast were pleasant and were trying their best. I suspect they were new and learning. For a three star hotel this was reasonable.

A little bit tired and in need of an upgrade. Could be a very nice hotel. Pillow cases were a bit grubby looking.

A Devon Gem

The hotel and staff are absolutely fantastic. Nothing is too much trouble, it's like being at home with extras. Food is generous and tasty. Bedrooms and beds are large and comfortable. The pool area is a lovely relaxing space. An absolute Devon gem. When in Devon, it will be the only place I will want to stay.

Well worth staying here

Very nice hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful, we got a free upgrade to a very nice large room. The food was excellent and the facilities were excellent. Good gym with various equipment and weights and a brilliant outdoor heated pool. Would recommend this hotel
