The food was amazing, both the breakfast and the supper.

I stayed at Protea Hotel by Marriott Owerri Select from 25 January to 4 February for a total of 10 nights, and the experience was very positive overall. On arrival, my room was upgraded at no extra cost, which I appreciated, especially as recognition of my previous stay in 2025. The breakfast buffet was excellent, with a wide variety of options and more than enough choices each morning. The air conditioning worked well throughout my stay, and both the WiFi and general room comfort were reliable. Security at the main gate was thorough. While checks could sometimes feel selective, they are understandable given the current security situation in Nigeria and contribute to a sense of safety within the property. I was particularly impressed by the honesty of the staff. The receptionist refunded ₦46,000 to me, which I was not expecting and which could easily have been overlooked. That level of integrity deserves recognition.

The only concern was that hotel staff were checking the visas of foreign nationals. In my view, this goes beyond the hotel’s role, as visa checks fall under the responsibility of Nigerian Immigration, not hotel staff. ID verification is understandable, but visa enforcement should be left to the appropriate authorities.

The location

No ventilation in their rooms. They had to change our rooms still no ventilation. After showering steam from the shower have no where to go, so we had to open our bathroom door to let the steam in our bedroom. I washed my bonnet and hanged it in the room and for one week I was there it never dried. Me and my husband fell sick, very sick that we left that hotel to another one and healing started. Protea made their name and forgot that maintenance follows after making your name. Go to their Bar and Restaurant you see roofs leaking water. Anyways we will never lodge there again.
