English eccentricity at its Sri Lankan finest. A place to revel in the country’s heritage and understand why education here is and always has been top-notch.

I expect more confidence from the staff. I was proud to see young people working so hard, but I want to see next level of competence, and that comes from believing in yourselves. This is not to say service was bad, but I feel the property demands the best. Also, a fan in the rooms would make them less stuffy.

From the moment you drive up to The Hill Club, you feel like you’ve stepped back in time! Perfect for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in the history of the tea country. It’s been beautifully renovated and the rooms are spacious and luxuriant. The staff are attentive and The Hill Club Burger is delicious!

It was a big place and sometimes hard to find an actual staff member, but they were attentive to calls.

“A charming experience with thoughtful touches” All the extra touches made this stay special — from the water bottle placed in the bed to the welcoming tea on arrival. The gardens were absolutely stunning, and I loved staying somewhere with such rich history, especially knowing the Queen had visited. The bar was well priced, and overall, the ‘Little England’ atmosphere was exactly what I hoped for. A truly memorable experience.

The property’s historic nature is the main draw, and it means into this reputation. A wonderful sense of history.

The rooms were sub-standard at this price point. I wanted to take a bath but the tub was chipped and not so clean. The service was very patchy; it seemed that management was lacking. There were lots of rules (fair as it’s a members club) but I did not feel very welcome. I understand the tie and jacket requirement, but we were alone in the dining room, and it all felt a bit on the decline. The pricing is also curious. They charge for a single glass of filter water at meals - this nickel-and-dime approach is inappropriate at what should be a fine hotel. And beware that 35% is automatically added to food bills - which is an extortionate surprise at the end.
