Han Xuan Boutique Hostel

The serene surroundings of this xiaoqu (小区), located on the easternmost side of West Lake, were a real highlight. It is quiet and away from the crowds around West Lake, yet still within walking distance. We did not attempt the walk during our stay as it was simply too hot when we visited in late August. Room 303 is an attic unit and we found it quite charming. One thing to note is the relatively high beam/step on the floor separating the bathroom/toilet area from the bedroom, which we estimated to be around 30 cm high. Guests who may have difficulty stepping over a raised beam may wish to request a different room rather than Room 303. Also, as the minsu does not have a lift, guests with large or heavy luggage may prefer to avoid the third floor. We had a wonderful time chatting with the owner on our second morning. We found him a little unusual on our first night, when we returned at around 10 pm only to learn that he had already gone to bed, as he wakes up at 4 am the next morning. However, after chatting with him the next day, we found him to be an interesting person with plenty to share. He is still finding his feet when it comes to running the minsu, but we enjoyed our conversation with him and appreciated getting to know him better.

The minsu was taken over by a new owner, a retiree in his early 60s, just a month before our stay. As he is still settling into running the place, there were quite a few teething issues, some of which were not mentioned during the booking or check-in process. Our booking included breakfast, but there was no fixed breakfast menu. While the owner was happy for guests to make requests, we were not quite sure what or how much to request, especially as this was our first experience staying at a minsu where the owner was still very much finding his feet. We also noticed that quite a few items were not prepared in advance, as the owner seemed to expect guests to prepare or help themselves to some of them. That said, we could see that he was trying his best to manage the minsu on his own, and hopefully, with more experience, these teething issues will gradually be ironed out.

Very nice location on the quieter side of the west lake. Peaceful and calm environment. Clean rooms, two double beds suitable for my family.

Some choices with breakfast would have been better.

Unfortunately, I arrived at this charming boutique hostel in pain and unable to walk. If it had not been for the kindness and care of the host/manager, I don't think I could have got through the days. She mothered me, arranged for me to be driven to a hospital, fed me when I didn't want to eat because of the pain and generally took the greatest of care of me. She kept me company as I was unable to go out and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of West Lake Thank you from the bottom of my heart to you and your lady boss for taking such good care of me.
