Antares Bush Camp & Umgede Hide

Booking a home with a hide to yourself (with 24/7 access) is not a common thing. We had 4 adults. The home was fully equipped for self catering with everything (and more) that you would need. Rooms were very comfortable, a/c and outdoor shower. Large outdoor area for enjoying meals and relaxing. We visited in March and there were floods in January, so there was still a lot of water around and the vegetation was very thick. In our 2 nights there, we didn't have any animals come to the hide/waterhole. We spent multiple hours per day in the hide. There was just no reason for them to come with so much water around. Thankfully, we love birds and had a lovely time watching birds, terrapins, insects and nature in general. The hide set up is excellent with a day bed, chairs, charging, tea/coffee making facilities and a mini fridge. Ian visits often to check-in and we did enjoy his stories and asking him about wildlife. He is a wealth of information. Since the hide was quiet, we opted for the afternoon drives (one per day included in the rate) with Ian. We were lucky enough to get lions on a giraffe kill, rhino, lots of jackal and plenty of other plains game. Overall, we had a great time. Yes, dry season would be a much better time to maximise animal visits to the hide, but the safari drives at least give you opportunity to see them. If you're a birder, you'll be happy!

The host Ian was fantastic and wonderful. So helpful and proactive with the game drives as well.

Probably the fact we didn't book 4 days instead of 2. It would have increased our chances of seeing better game
