The hotel has a great location, and we appreciated how speedy both the check-in and check-out processes were. The staff were generally courteous and pleasant, which made the overall experience positive in many respects. Unfortunately, our stay was seriously affected by the condition of our supposedly non-smoking room. The room reeked of cigarette smoke few hours after we stayed in. As the smell became progressively stronger, my friend and I eventually started experiencing respiratory and allergic symptoms and were unable to sleep, despite having just arrived in Kunming after a red-eye flight. We reported the problem to the front desk and were told that the hotel could not control the actions of other guests. We understood that the hotel could not control what other guests chose to do, but we were disappointed that there appeared to be very limited options to protect guests staying in non-smoking rooms. We were told that the hotel was fully booked and therefore unable to move us to another room. We also asked about an air purifier, but were informed that the hotel's only air purifier was already being used by another guest. The alternative offered was to spray air freshener in our room. I declined because I am allergic to the perfume commonly found in air fresheners, and, more importantly, this would only mask the cigarette smell rather than address the underlying problem. Eventually, the housekeeping team brought in a standing fan and a portable air-conditioning unit and opened the window to ventilate the room. This improved the air quality somewhat, but unfortunately did not resolve the problem. My friend and I ultimately had to take medication to deal with the allergic reaction before we could finally get some sleep. The saving grace of the entire experience was Manager Chris. She was extremely impressive and demonstrated a level of service orientation that stood out. She sincerely apologised and acknowledged that, while the hotel could not control the behaviour of other guests, it could have done more to support guests affected by smoking — including having more air purifiers available. I appreciated that she did not simply make excuses but genuinely considered what the hotel could have done better. Chris also impressed us with her quick thinking and willingness to go the extra mile later during our stay. We were leaving the hotel to catch a train when our ride was almost disrupted because our DiDi driver cancelled at the very last minute. With time running out, Chris immediately ran to the front of the hotel, found a driver who happened to be there and asked him to take us to the train station because we had a train to catch. Her prompt intervention potentially saved us from missing our train. We shudder to think what might have happened without her help. Overall, the hotel has several positives — excellent location, efficient check-in/check-out and courteous staff. However, the smoking issue was a significant problem, particularly for guests with allergies or respiratory sensitivities. While the hotel cannot completely control the behaviour of other guests, I believe there should be stronger measures and better contingency options to protect guests who have booked non-smoking rooms. Manager Chris deserves special recognition. Her sincerity, quick thinking and genuine commitment to helping guests turned what could have been a completely negative experience into one where we still left with a positive impression of the hotel's people. She is an excellent example of what thoughtful and service-oriented hospitality should look like.

A reliable and very convenient hotel in a strategic location. It sits beside several larger international chain hotels that can easily cost two to three times more, which makes this Holiday Inn excellent value for money. Although the property is slightly dated, it is close to shops, restaurants and a large supermarket just one block away. Pickups and drop-offs are easy, Didi is readily available, and many places in central Kunming are within walking distance. I was travelling alone with my child, and we were especially grateful for the unexpected room upgrade. It was a thoughtful surprise and made our stay much more comfortable. Breakfast offers a wide selection, though the quality is slightly below average. Still, it is sufficient to start the day. Overall, this was a great place to begin our Yunnan trip and spend our first few days in Kunming. For the location, convenience and value, I would highly recommend it and would gladly stay here again.
