The location was excellent and I found the staff quite welcoming and friendly. I would definitely recommend to other travelers.
I did not like the fact that there was no bathroom in the dorm rooms. The toilets and showers were right next to the dorms but still, you had to go outside to get to them.

It was my first experience at a hostel. We had a private room with private bath which was as expected. I can't speak to the dorms and shared bath. The location is in the middle of the "locals" area of Hopkins, near restaurants and the beach.

Clean, nice covered area and kitchen. Close to stores and shops as well as a 2 min walk to beach. And it’s a great location for the beach.
Staff were friendly. Bathrooms were good, shower was large. Rooms were clean and beds comfy.
Noisy. Late at night you can hear people talking in main area. Someone was rustling bottles late at night and some guests did not sleep. They chatted all night. You can hear everything including the traffic and people.
People were allowed to smoke in the main area and for those who don’t it was quite unpleasant when trying to enjoy your food and someone is smoking right beside you. People rip by early in the morning like 3-5am on their motorcycles or vehicles.

-Great location right in the center near the bus stop
-Staff were helpful and provided good information
-Kind of a cool design with nice common area
-the only hostel between San Ignacio/Belize City/Placencia as far as I’m aware, so it opens up an interesting part of the country to budget travel
-Not too clean and quite a lot of insects in dorms
-Shower water ranges between cold and lukewarm
-The place is in need of a refresh
-clumpy pillows
-less good value than average for Belize

A very relaxing place to unwind. The kitchen is well serviced with cooking utensils and a fridge for your food. Great hammock area to relax. A selection of books to choose from. The owner provides some great advice for things to do and see with recommendations. Coffee was provided in the morning which was nice.
If you rely on wifi connection, do not stay here. The owners use a cheap provider and it goes down frequently and when it is working, the speeds are slow. I walked up the road to Ella's Restaurant where the wifi was perfect. The dorm is beside the front road, the walls have no insulation and it is very noisy. The hot water is solar. If you have days of cloud cover, there is no hot water.

Great central location easy to access. Friendly owner who was happy to chat and point out where to eat.
Tired and neglected, the funky dodo is currently being in the process of being sold. There were cobwebs on the bunk beds, fans clogged with dust. The bathroom and toilet seemed pretty tired.

We booked two nights. Because there was no Wi-Fi from the first evening and it wasn't fixed the next morning, we asked to cancel the second night. I need internet for work. The owner refused to refund that night, citing a policy she made up herself. If you advertise Wi-Fi as one of the highlights on booking.com, you should be able to deliver. That feels unfair. The same goes for the fee you have to pay for filtered water and to pay by credit card.

I had only planned to stay at Funky Dodo Backpackers Hostel for one night, but ended up staying an entire week – and I’m so glad I did! From the moment I arrived, I was warmly welcomed by the incredible team: Anna, Alison and Lorraine. Their genuine hospitality and friendly vibe made it a joy to stay there, and there was none of that sterile atmosphere you get with some hostels.
The staff went above and beyond to make my stay comfortable. They were also incredibly knowledgeable and approachable and gave me great advice on things to do in the local area and beyond, and even helped me plan onward travel for the next leg of my journey.
I stayed in a large family room with an ensuite bathroom at the back of the hostel. It was immaculately clean, spacious, and quiet. The room included a comfortable double bed and two bunk beds, perfect for groups or solo travelers who enjoy extra space and privacy.
I also noticed that the communal showers and toilets were cleaned frequently and kept in great condition.
Another reason to stay at the Funky Dodo is its perfect location—right in the heart of Hopkins Village. The beach is just a one-minute walk away, making it incredibly convenient for daily swims and sunset strolls. Plus, the beach area is lined with a variety of great restaurants and bars, offering plenty of dining options. The local supermarket is literally a 30 second walk away.
The communal facilities are excellent. The common area is relaxed and welcoming with lots of benches, hammocks and tables . It is also spotlessly maintained, and well-equipped with two refrigerators, a microwave, gas stove, and a coffee machine – everything you need to feel at home (oh and there is free coffee in the mornings). There is also a beautiful roof top terrace that is worth checking out and is quiet too.
My only regret was that I didn’t spend longer! Funky Dodo, thank you for an unforgettable stay.
Everything was great..

The showers were quite big, with hooks for your clothes and a shelf to put your toiletries. The toilets and showers were cleaned frequently.
Hostel staff wasn’t the friendliest although they help you with a straight face. The place to put my belongings was full of dry lentils from previous person I suppose and it could have been cleaned. The rooms had no air con.

A nice hostel with a good location, very quiet at night
The value for money was not worth it. And you had to pay extra to get drinkable water

-Clean rooms and common areas
- Close to the beach
- Equipped kitchen and fridge
- Youth Hostel vibe
- Lots of sandflies in common areas
- No WiFi in rooms (had to use the WiFi from nearby restaurant Coconut Husk)
- Unhelpful staff
- Loud fans and no AC so it gets hot at night
- No hot water (warm water at best)

The room was clean with art on the wall. The space is lovely, inviting, and comfortable. The beach is very near.

Shady garden, morning coffee, friendly staff (with one exception), location, clean, comfortable beds
Could have used more comfortable seating for reading, lounging. Some guests didn’t clean up after themselves in the kitchen but I don’t know that could be changed.

It’s a lovely vibe with hammocks everywhere and a clean kitchen and shared bathroom. The beds were comfortable and the bunks were very high (with great steps up) and substantial so you weren’t too bothered by others fidgeting!
Some of the staff could do with cracking a smile every now and then (except Alison who was very friendly!), but they were helpful albeit reluctantly.
The whole place needs a good lick of paint. It’s tired and some things are broken eg the locks for your padlock to go on the larger drawers. There are a few simple maintenance jobs plus a coat of paint which would bring this place up to its full glory!

The room was spacious, quiet and clean. The bed was comfortable. Kitchen area was good. Plenty of outside space. Coffee and water available. Information board handy and close to food options and ATM. Easy to hitch a lift to most places from the junction but bus routes at main junction if you needed. Taxi option too if that's your thing. Some decent hikes not too far away. All in all a pleasant stay.
All good😁

They had a kitchen. It was well located.
The room was very warm and only had very little fans. Some of them were broken. The bathrooms didn't have lights and were always dirty. The price was way too high for what you get.

Cheapest budget hostel in Hopkins which attracted a friendly group of travellers. Good location near the beach. Free coffee in the mornings. Kitchen to make your own meals. Bars and restaurants nearby.

Great little hostel located close to the beach and restaurants.
Nice shared shaded spaces to hangout in the heat of the day.
Good bathroom and showers, as well as a great little kitchen to use.
Owners and staff were always at hand and keeping the place clean.
Fans we’re available for the dorms

Friendly and helpful owners who were very responsive when I mailed them.
Information at the hostel of what to do in the area (hikes and waterfalls etc) and info about transportation to other places.
Nice atmosphere.
Cute little garden with hammocks.
Almost right next to the busstop and ATM.
Beds with curtains and small bedlights. (I liked it that they don't have a big light)
Big storage drawers under the bed where you can leave and lock your big backpack.
Communal kitchen with fridge and stove.
Cheap bike rental by the hour.
Beach nearby.
Supermarket across the street.
The place is a bit rundown and could use some renovation. Although it wasn't a problem for me.
There's only 1 stove with place for 2 pans so around dinnertime it's busy and you probably need to wait before you can cook.

It's a great location. Very worthwhile to wake up for sunrise. The free coffee was also great. Staff very knowledgeable and helpful.
I didn't like it that they charge for drinking water. The fan situation in the 8 bed dorm was also not great.

location is good, kitchen is quite ok, easy to reach. hammock area is nice.
terrible bed, old and loud fans in the room, no privacy in the shower/toilet area. sinks could be refurbished. way too expensive for what you get.
8.0 / 10.0
I really liked the vibe in the hostel. The place looks very cute, there's a really good kitchen and always someone in reception. The location is very convenient, right by the main roads and the beach. A very clean part of the beach too. The dorm beds are spacious and with al the little conveniences like a bedlamp, locker, little shelf and curtains. I read bad things about the mattresses, but to be honest mine wasn't that bad. You feel the springs a bit, but for me it was ok.
The sliding door was a bit noisy for a dorm. I had cold showers but apparently that depends on the clouds with the solar power, for me it was fine because it was warm. I think the place would look even better if broken/decolored decorations we're taken away, but those are just small things. All in all good place with character for a fair price!
