Eraeliya — A Jewel in the Pearl of the Indian Ocean Some places are beautiful. Others have a soul. Eraeliya Villas & Garden is very much the latter. Perched dramatically on a stunning cliff above the ocean, this exquisite boutique retreat feels almost suspended between the sea and the sky. With effortless access to the beach and unforgettable sunsets, the setting is nothing short of extraordinary. Our stay became even more magical with an unexpected upgrade to a room overlooking both the ocean and swimming pool. It truly felt like a dream — and exceeded anything we could have wished for. What sets Eraeliya apart is its quiet sophistication and instinctive attention to detail. Every gesture feels personal and beautifully considered, extending even beyond the hotel when exploring the area. And every evening, just before going to bed, a little local surprise awaited us — a charming touch inspired by Sri Lankan culture that made each night feel special and added an unexpected sense of discovery. A very special thank you to Sudishka, who went far beyond expectations in organising a beautiful birthday celebration for my niece; to Kavindu, whose warmth made us feel genuinely at home; and to Raj at reception, for his kindness and effortless professionalism. Our deepest appreciation to Miss Lola, Hotel Manager, and Mr Akila, Executive Sous Chef, whose dedication and care are reflected throughout the experience. The cuisine deserves special praise — a beautiful blend of authentic Sri Lankan traditions and exceptionally premium seafood, creating dishes that feel both deeply rooted and wonderfully refined. Eraeliya is the rare kind of place where luxury is never announced — it is quietly felt: in the setting, the cuisine, the details, the little surprises, and above all, in the people. We came to experience a beautiful corner of the Pearl of the Indian Ocean and left with something far more precious — the feeling of having been genuinely cared for.

To be honest, what is not to like about this property. From the moment we stepped into the lush gardens and were greeted at the beautiful reception, we knew this was going to be an amazing stay. We originally booked the Ocean View Loft, however were upgraded to the Ramaya Suite on the first floor with a balcony overlooking the lawns, gardens, and sea. Dinner is served on your patio or in the garden, which ever you choose. And it was actually a nice concept for us that there are no formal dining / lounge area, as your suite is your home for the duration of the stay. The service from everyone was superb, friendly, and nothing was a problem when asked. I must also commend the chef, as we ate at the property twice and both nights the food was amazing. The last night we spoilt ourselves with the Southern Sri Lanka Mud Crab curry, and we both agreed that it is probably one of the best dishes we've eating in a long time. It was an absolute amazing stay for our 3 nights and 3 days at this property. It really as the fitting end to our holiday in Sri Lanka, and we loved every minute of it. Thank you to all.

In our suite the one sliding door was stuck and didn't work, but that cannot deter from the 10 rating.

The location and overall experience

The service pace could improve

This hotel has stunning decor and a prime beachfront location with excellent arrival service that creates a luxurious first impression. However, several significant problems marred our stay.

Our original room had severe plumbing odors and was under maintenance (not communicated beforehand) • The entire hotel was undergoing construction with builders throughout the property • Our upgraded room had beautiful design but only lukewarm water for the feature of the suite’s stone bath • Poor communication and transparency about ongoing renovations Expensive rates with no included breakfast and no nearby dining options • Overpriced minibar ($4 for small chip packets) • Hidden 18% VAT added to all prices, increasing our nightly rate by $55 Birthday cake we requested was allegedly “thrown away” before evening (likely eaten by staff) • Promised complimentary breakfast was retracted the next morning • Difficult to locate staff for service requests despite provided WhatsApp contact. Poor communication skills • Inconsistent follow-through on commitments
