Generally clean and pretty spacious, pretty cheap. The patio is also pretty nice. Convenient elevator. Good staff.
The kitchen space was pretty narrow, and the "dining" room is not really welcoming. It doesn't bring any special hostel/friendly atmosphere.
My room was way too warm, and the little fan that was provided was not really efficient enough... impossible to cool down, even at night. The single glazed windows also don't help with the noise from the boulevard right in front of the building.
The gym wasn't free, which is what is indicated on the website (not up to date)

Staff were spot on and the facilities were very clean including the shared bathrooms.
We stayed for 2 nights in the summer (February) and the rooms are like a sauna. The hottest room I have ever stayed in. The staff are aware but there is no solution. The building is 60+ years old and needs a proper HVAC system installed - which I imagine is super costly given YMCA is a charity.
We were provided with two fans for our room which helped, but it was literally blowing hot air around. We struggled to sleep both nights as it was so hot.
Look, it’s super cheap and good value for money considering hotels in the area are £100+ per night minimum, but if you can’t sleep in the heat, it’s not worth it.

The staff was super friendly and the atmosphere was great. The location is perfect, easy and fast to get to the centre of the city. We also had an amazing Xmas Eve lunch and dinner at the hostel, what an amazing day!
The shower heads were quite low, for a tall person like me it was a bit difficult to wash my hair. I could also feel the bed springs of the mattress when I was laying down on the bed.

It was convenient and did the job for a one night stay
A little dated and basic. Kitchens were small

Great location, friendly staff
Very hot and stuffy, and not well ventilated. Smelt like BO and beer everywhere.

Great price, location and sense of security in the building. Was able to get a extra pillow which helped me get a better sleep. Shared facilities were kept very clean so no concerns there.
Rooms get very hot and don't have proper cooling. Thermal curtains may help but I think some sort of ventilation is needed in a building of that size like a HVAC. The single glazed windows also don't help the situation much. Good to see they added heaters in as those were not there when I stayed there many years ago, and it did get a bit on the cold side in winter!

Good for a short stay with bus stop outside the property
Bit noisy probably due to a batch of kids staying there

Super friendly staff, clean bathrooms/kitchen, and fun activities (ping pong table, pool table, seating area and ability to connect a laptop to watch a movie). Nice to be able to store stuff after checkout time at 10 am so that we could check out the city before we headed to the airport
Room was hotter than the outdoors, even with two fans running, and there were cockroaches coming from various spots in the room :(

Not enough air to cool place down. Fans was just recirculating hot air

Everyone that was working on the hostel and that I came in contact with was extremely friendly and helpful. Really amazing staff!
The room was very very hot, with a window that I couldn't open all the way and had the cheapest/smallest fan I ever saw. I think just having a better fan would make it a lot better. Parking only starting at 5pm also was a little annoying.

The beds were super comfy and the location was an easy walk into town. Plenty of power ports to charge in your room next to the beds. Facilities were clean and tidy and even had a hair straightener in the bathroom.
It was hot! There was a fan in the room but that didn’t really help. I slept well but my friend was woken by fire engines and street noise. We walked past the entrance when we arrived as it wasn’t very clear and ended up at the gym behind the hostel. Short walk back around we found the way in.

Location, breakfast, friendly staff, safe residence
Sometimes Irresponsible Shared Toilets users (don'tclean after themselves after use), nighttime downstairs noise on some nights
10.0 / 10.0
The hostel was really good. The staff will keep your bags if you arrive early for no extra charge. Usually, places in Auckland would charge you something to hold your bags. So this is a plus for YMCA. Also, the staff are really friendly and the hostel atmosphere is a positive one so far. It's safe, the location is great and so far I'm happy with the choice.
Noisy neighbour.

1) Property location in Auckland CBD is handy
2) Affordability
3) weekly room / floor cleaning schedule,
4) friendly receptionist staff
I would like to mention these points humbly as a constructive critism, and to allow room for improvement. The most concerning issues in this Hostel are:
1) Hyagine: The Shared floor toilets often left unclean after previous users (ie, not flushed, seats with urine, etc). I had to go downstairs/upstairs to use other floor's toliets due to this issue. I suffer from nausea. There are no inspections or reminder notices left on toilet doors regarding this - to remind others to clean after themselves after they finish their business :(
2) Noise: sometimes annoying noisy neighbours downstairs, particularly at nighttime.
3) Bedroom servicing: there are delays responding to requests to changing bed sheets from guests (it takes time to navigate your concerns to the staff to respond to your need to change your bed sheets prior to the weekly preset room servicing schedule).

Yes the staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was excellent, value for money.
The room was a bit hot and it was difficult opening the windows. I was a bit shocked to see cockroaches in the 2nd night I was there on the fridge and one climbed onto my bed onto the pillow and a key got stolen from my suitcase. Also the light didn't work in the dining room where you eat and there were no cups in the kitchen.

Love it is in the city and clean.
They mention a policy of no escooter or bikes to be brought to the room. To store, it is 25 per nite at a secured locked storage.

I like the fact that my single room complete with fridge and chairs and comfy bed. My room is based in a woman’s only area and it is not that far from the washroom/toilet and laundry area. They have a $10 breakfast starting at 6am for guests too!
The city noise outside and my room was facing the main Vincent Street area

Honestly, very little. The location is the only decent thing.
This was one of the worst hostel experiences I’ve had. They charged me for returning the key 20 minutes late, yet it took them over 3 weeks to refund my bond. That’s just shameless. The staff was rude, unhelpful, and seemed annoyed by basic questions. The prices they tell you don’t match what’s online — that’s straight-up false advertising.
The layout of the building is a joke: tiny kitchens, poorly equipped, and uncomfortable. You eat in a separate small room with no ventilation and sealed windows. Not a single space feels like it was made for guests. They clearly only care about squeezing money out of people.
