Discovery Resorts - Wilpena Pound

The resort nestles comfortably in a very natural setting, is attractive and well-maintained, and provides a great location from which to explore the magnificent surrounding national park (everything was lush and green after all the rain, but we needed a four-wheel drive to properly explore the gorges where the water still runs). The well-stocked shop is a useful addition to the property, as is the information centre. Our Heysen cottage was comfortable and well located. We appreciated that drinking water was offered freely, as what is in the taps is not considered suitable for drinking.

Their "restaurant" is really a huge cafe and when busy (as it was during our July stay) was terribly noisy. Food and beverages must be ordered at the bar. This is far from refined dining, though we were surprised to find the food was good, exceeding our expectations for this type of venue.

Great hikes right from the Park. The deluxe tent had a lovely outlook and was comfy. The food was reasonably priced considering the remoteness. Having the little shop right there was handy.

I did have a rather unpleasant bathroom cleaning situation from the previous lady guest when we first arrived that I took care of (Yuck). I did bring it to the attention of John at reception the next day when there were no other guests checking in. I showed him the photos and whilst he was very apologetic I do think it warranted a breakfast voucher or even a coffee when you are spending around $400 a night. He did say he’d only been on site 2 weeks so maybe he wasn’t able to offer that but it did tarnish the experience a bit to be honest.

Loved the location, the updated rooms and restaurant on site.

I wasn’t prepared for the restaurant prices but understand the location is remote so fairly unavoidable

The location is fabulous!

The whole place was overbooked and understaffed. Very friendly but untrained staff. Basically all foreign students on working visa. No experienced manager visible on site. The worst was that as booked guest you had to fight to get a table. Table booking did not work. Since change of management and ownership the quality of the resort has clearly dropped. The rooms are equipped with the bare minimum. Room maintenance non existent. Bed was made up, but rest not cleaned up, no coffee replaced, mugs not washed, no new towels. Bathroom not cleaned up. Restaurant: Good food, but strongly reduced menu list. But prices went up. The place has become an overprized venue.
