The food was excellent. We ate in the restaurant on one of the two nights we stayed and the food was exceptional both in quality and value. The building itself is very fine and the additional conservatory spaces which expand the downstairs space allowing for the restaurant and additional bar seating have been tastefully added.
I have rated the comfort down one notch due to the bathroom. Hotel bathrooms are one of my pet subjects - most are woefully poor. This was good but two things could be improved. One is a need for more space to hang towels, especially near the shower. In a twin room, the expectation should be that both hand towels and bath towels will be used. Hanging space for both hand towels near the wash basin and both bath towels near the shower are essential and weren't provided. The other is ventilation. As with many interior retro-fitted hotel bathrooms, getting heat and steam out of the bathroom adequately is rarely accomplished and this is no exception. This coupled with the high radiator setting made the room quite unpleasant after a shower. Finding oneself sweating in a sauna like atmosphere while trying to shave in a mirror that simply fogs over again whenever it is wiped, detracts from the comfort experience.
I have also knocked a point for value for money. This is due to bar prices which aren't actually that far above the norm but for my brother and I who like a drink, this was a bit of a sting. However, if you're not a big drinker, the restaurant is excellent value.
The lost point on facilities in room is the same as the comfort point - bathroom.
I considered dropping a point for location. It gains massively from having beautiful views across the valley over the town to the castle on the far side. In this sense the location is glorious! However, it loses a bit from being a mile up a steep hill from the civic centre of the town - which is beyond the station. If you don't mind the walk, this is a minor inconvenience and is intrinsic to achieving the fabulous views.
