Pousada Convento de Beja

Gorgeous and interesting space in which to spend a night or two (max). Excellent breakfast (included) served in a beautiful space. We also had dinner one night which was not great but very nice maybe 7/10 and possibly the best option around. Staff was friendly and accommodating.

AC was not brilliant but helped cool things a bit. We slept with little clothing and no sheets and managed! Beds were hard but felt sort of in keeping with the space. We also had a cot bed as travelled with one teen daughter...that was pretty terrible but there was a chaise lounge chair in the same space (we'd booked the suite) and she ended up moving to that night two... it was a little short for her 5'7" body but worked and much more comfortable. Beja itself was fine for a night or two but had we wanted to also spend more time exploring a town or nearby wineries, we would have been better in nearby Evora etc.

Hairdryer in the room did not work, and you had to be at least 5 ft 8 inches to reach it. Air conditioning could not be controlled as wall unit broken in the room. Towel rail in bathroom held on to wall with mastic. No tea and coffee making facilities in room

An imposing building from the outside, and even more so inside! This spacious and echoey converted convent is all cool marble and high ceilings. The rooms are all centred round the cloisters with long sparsely decorated hallways. The bedroom was spacious, good storage, a working safe, and minibar. The pool was a welcome addition as it was hot in Beja in June. Lovely palm trees, sun loungers, and parasols and cold water.

Although I didn’t use the restaurant, it was unclear whether there was a bar service particularly for the pool area. Some staff did occasionally walk round but seemed to be clearing up or re-positioning sun loungers. The air conditioning is not proper air con, rather some sort of circulated air which did not cool the room down at all. It had to be on high speed and at the lowest temperature and be left on for hours to make any sort of difference. It is an old, converted building so it may not be possible to install full A/C. It would have been nice to have had a bit more information on the history of the convent itself.
