The room was excellent, the food was delicious, except no salmon for breakfast! Stairs were a good work out to the third floor, a lift would be great! Central location was very convenient.
Salmon available for breakfast, a lift & parking

The location.
The bedrooms which were once charming have had a really tasteless makeover. The new check in process felt like an episode of fawly towers. Dogs are not allowed to be left in the rooms by themselves and there is no dog bed. Dog owners have to take their dogs to breakfast in a separate dining room or put them in their car.

A historic hotel with great character in a wonderful location. The room was lovely.
The breakfast was excellent but the evening meal very average

The historical setting. The wonky floors, renovated furnishings. Great food and friendly staff.
My husband is particularly tall ,which proved problematic in the top of house room. I don't recall seeing anything on the website about number of stairs and low headroom.

Excellent location with lovely views over the river.
There could have been a small night light in the room as there were a couple of steps.

First time back since refurbishment. Glad to see original features have been kept
Reception is now on first floor. Tricky to book in with a heavy case .
10.0 / 10.0
The room with a view, the location and the quality of the newly refurbished rooms. Full marks for a nightlight in the bathroom - so often you need to put the light on in the middle of the night which activates the fan!
Minor niggle - there needs to be another light over or near the coffee/tea area in the corner of the room. There is one small desklight nearby but it doesn't give enough light

The Royal Castle is well placed in Dartmouth to get around. It has recently been renovated and this is to a great standard. The rooms were comfortable.
Unfortunately, there are many steps to all the rooms, even the ladies is on the first floor away from the bar area.

The room was nicely decorated with lovely quirky touches. I loved the use of rope (to hang pictures and on the key ring) - it was a good reference to the location. The room was small but I knew before booking. The layered interior design kept it feeling cosy and I was happy in the space. The meal in the bar was delicious. I had to check out early - before the breakfast was open - but the staff were happy to accommodate me in the dining space and provided me with tea and croissants. Delighted with this service.
Honestly, I was very happy with everything

Quaint, old hotel with lively pub and restaurant on the lower floors. Rooms have all been newly renovated to a high standard with lots of electrical outlets(!) but without compromising the character and charm of the hotel. Location is excellent, right in the centre of town. Cooked breakfast was included. I had eggs florentine, which was excellent.
The hotel does not have a lift, which was not a problem for me, but might be for others.

The restaurant was nice. That's it.
The window in our room and bathroom does not open. It's not broken. In their infinite wisdom the windows they fitted during the recent refurb are just glass pains within a frame and are not built to open. Apparently all the rooms are like that. I spoke to the duty manager, the reservations lady and even the restaurant staff and they all seems as confused by why this was done. Our room was small and so stuffy and airless, it was inhumane. I am glad we stayed only 1 night. God knows how miserable that will be in the summer! The bed was also rock hard. I was tempted to sleep on the floor that looked like it had more give than the concrete bed we were given. Definitely won't be back.

Lovely location and freshly refurbished property.
The place was absolutely roasting hot, also the next morning at breakfast we waited over half an hour for a waitress to take our order, despite going back up and asking again, she still wasn’t forthcoming and we actually had to leave for a meeting that we were going to.

Room - Recently refurbished, new decor and facilities
Location - Opposite an enclosed harbour with the Dart in the background
Reception - Moved to the 1st floor, huge room with one receptionist. Only deals with one customer at a time, leaves you waiting in corridor waiting...
Breakfast - Slow at peak times. English breakfast mostly bland/overcooked except for the mushrooms with their dressing of thyme and balsamic vinegar.
Room - After two months since the refurbishment the chair had damage to the Rattan and a double electrical socket below the TV was loose. This hotel is old and has uneven floors, quirky/fun perhaps but the steps in the room from bed to the loo may cause anxiety for those older less balanced people at night. There are rooms with Jacuzzi baths but Booking.com don't mention this. The staff enjoy this ignorance for those booking through Booking.com and tease you with the chant "Should of booked direct".

Not being able to reserve a window table for a special birthday, having booked 3 x rooms for 2 nights. Told tables cannot be reserved however then when I asked to change the table on the night, advised the others were reserved!

It was all perfect

Location was fabulous, and the only positive.
It was the food festival so a busy weekend, however we did not experience a hotel, just an over crowded public bar with not enough staff. We arrived Friday around 6pm, couldn’t get a seat in the bar, let alone any food. Zero accommodation made for paying guests. They even had a sign outside saying open from 8am, encouraging even more people to squeeze in. People were sitting on the stairs with their drinks as no where to go. Our dog friendly room was so small, no windows just a panel of glass over looking the main staircase, as if we were on show. You couldn’t breathe in there. You couldn’t close the curtains as the lighting was shocking and dingy, so very hard to do your make-up and hair, and hardly any space to get dressed. The bathroom was even smaller, with the sink behind the door which opened inwards making it worse…..although it couldn’t have opened outwards as the bed was in the way. Such a disappointment. Very expensive, and ruined our weekend.

clean, position, character of property, staff largely great
ordered a room on the second floor but was at the top, service at breakfast was slow, unhelpful that suggested not easy to return after 11 - staff defensive and not helpful - understood it may have been teething problems, more shelves in bathroom

The position is undeniably magnificent and there was a time when this hotel must have been the jewel in the crown
Our room smelt and I was unaware that there was an air freshener continuously in operations.
We we were awoken in the night by a continuous blue flashing light - which kept us awake. I learnt in the morning that this wa the air freshener and every room had one!
The chamber maids told us that we could have unplugged it but I had no idea what it was!
The overall impression is that this hotel is tired and awaiting a facelift- which I assume that St Austell Breweries have on their list.
On checking out the receptionist showed no interest in our comments.
What a shame that such a lovely hotel has been allowed to get this way

Breakfast was superb , room above ours was full of creaking from their floorboards,
A little noises from the end of the alleyway at the back of the hotel which we overlooked
As we were not in the room other than to sleep the overall price was good
The view from the room , everything else was enjoyable

No lift.
