About this cottage rental

This lovely historic home was built in 1902 by the Rich Lumber Company when they came to pull lumber from this charming hamlet. This cottage was originally a mill worker boarding house but was converted into a family owned home purchased by John T. Olson who immigrated rom Sweden. The cottage is made out of original hemlock and has two bedrooms, one bath with the original claw foot tub/shower, a cozy family room with a wood pellet stove, a morning room, a large enclosed porch, full kitchen, breakfast bar and dining area. Two kayaks and two bicycles are included with the cottage and are available for your use. The home still has many of the original antique furnishings including the icebox that the Olson family stored their dairy products in to sell to the townspeople of Wanakena. Enjoy your morning coffee in front of the wood pellet stove in the cozy living room or in an Adirondack chair on the large wrap-around, screened-in porch surrounded by the aroma of balsam firs. Walk one block to the quaint village center. Go for a swim or launch the house kayaks at the public beach just 2 blocks away. Walk accross the river on our historic walking bridge which is what brings many people to the Hamlet. Walk to the tennis courts, basketball court or playground which is also set up for Pickle Ball. Take a self-guided walking tour of Wanakena, courtesy of the Wanakena Historical Association and visit our newly opened Wanakena History Center right on 2nd Street! For an old time feel, go to Otto's Abode in town and buy some candy or ice cream. You can also walk into the cooler for a beer. Take advantage of abundant opportunities for hiking, boating, fishing, and exploring, as well as easy day trips to visit the Adirondack Experience museum in Blue Mountain Lake, the Wild Center in Tupper Lake, or the tourist shops in Lake Placid and the High Peaks Region. Be sure to look up at night where it is not uncommon to see the Milky Way. Although this property sleeps 4, we have air mattresses and can sleep 6 people easily. Please note our camp is closed from November - May

Wanakena is the epitomization of an Adirondack village. It's quaint and quiet trafficked by friendly locals, hikers, mountain bikers, kayakers, fishermen and just plain nice people. The house itself is homey and Adirondacky. We walked every day or night to swim in the Oswagotchie after exploring. The area is short on restaurants, but the house is equipped with a nice kitchen so I was happy to cook and save a few bucks by eating in. The location is right on the Cranberry50 trail. Perfect kayaking is around every corner. And the chance of seeing wildlife is really high. What a great trip.

My family stayed at this wonderful cottage for an amazing week. The house is beautiful, homey, well equipped--in short, exactly what we were looking for on a vacation where we both relaxing at the house and going on day trips. At the house, we cooked and read inside and on the amazing porch. We went on easy day trips to historic sites (John Brown farm, Wilder farm), nature activities (Wild Center, Wanakena walking trail (many other trails around) and the Lake Placid Olympic activities. Lynn was incredibly helpful throughout the process--offering information and welcoming questions. If you are looking for an Adirondack retreat, this felt like a home away from home. Thank you, Lynn and family for providing the house for a great vacation!

It's a great location, walking distance to kayak launching, a small store, and a level 2 EV charging station. The cottage is nice and has two nice porches, one of which is glassed in for 3 seasons. We used the supplied kayaks in 3 different days. There is a restaurant close by but no full grocery store. We brought groceries from home.
