We stayed at Margo’s Garden in Hokkaido during our first trip to Japan, and it was an unforgettable experience. We rented a car at New Chitose Airport, and we are very glad we did. The drive was easy, and having a car gave us the freedom to explore. One evening, we drove about 20–30 minutes to the nearby town of Otaru for dinner, which was a great opportunity to try something new. The farmstead itself is simple and intentional. Guests conserve water and use the provided toiletries, which felt thoughtful rather than restrictive. The cozy communal space, with one long shared table, was the heart of the place. I even spent a full day working there comfortably, (the WiFi was stronger there than in our cabin). The atmosphere was incredibly welcoming. Guests and staff came from all over the world, including New Zealand, Scotland, and Switzerland. It felt beautifully international and open. Everyone was kind, curious, and happy to talk. Miwa, the main cook, was absolutely amazing. Her meals were fresh and flavorful. Somehow, she also provided food for a nearby ski resort while cooking our breakfasts and dinners. We honestly don’t know how she does it. Her energy and talent are remarkable. What made the experience truly special was the sense of community. The staff sat with us during dinners, shared stories, and made everyone feel included. It’s the kind of place where strangers quickly become friends.
