About this house rental

The essence of Mediterranean living: large courtyard and fabulous roof terrace

Located in the very centre of Jelsa, this century-old property of Jelsa’s famed captains consists of two newly renovated adjoining houses, both accessed through a large courtyard. The magnificent spacious courtyard, a hidden gem of the property is the essence of true Mediterranean living: outdoor living with full privacy in the most centrally located property.
Surrounded by exceptional cultural and historic heritage, the property full of character offers a special holiday.

Apartment # 2 (for 2) lies on the 1st and 2nd floor of the large renovated heritage stone house. It consists of a bedroom with a king-size bed, a fully equipped kitchen, a bathroom with a shower, a cozy TV corner, and a large (35 m2) rooftop terrace with a shower and beach chairs.

Free WiFi is available.

The bedroom is furnished with an antique wardrobe and an extra large double bed (200 x 200). It has two windows with Mediterranean shutters, one overlooking the courtyard bougainvillea and the other, the quiet backstreet and gardens. It has air conditioning /heating.

The newly refurbished fully equipped kitchen with large refrigerator is next to the bedroom and has dining table and chairs.

The bathroom (with shower) is next to the kitchen and just by the inner staircase leading to the upper floor.
The upper floor has retained its original flooring and has a sitting corner with TV which is on the way to the spacious terrace, which is surely the highlight of this apartment.

The rooftop terrace offers a superb view of the charming nearby streets and the surrounding wooded hilltops and villages.
It has a dining table and chairs, shower and beach chairs.

Start your day with breakfast on the terrace before setting off to one of the island's crystal-clear beaches or secluded coves or simply enjoy a relaxing evening drink while gazing at the star-dotted sky.

The Sea has been an inseparable part of our ancestor's lives – a vocation, devotion and inspiration which can still be felt in every corner of the house. Appreciating it ourselves too, the house has been renovated with great care and attention for every detail.

Please note that both apartments share the same entrance and passage through the courtyard. The courtyard is used by guests in Apartment 1 while the rooftop terrace is used by guests from Apartment 2.
Apartment 1 and 2 can be also rented together by the same party.

Getting around: While staying on the island, don’t miss Hvar, the town of exceptional monumental heritage, and if you’re looking for more dynamic evenings, it’s best to be there when the night falls.
For those who wish to discover the beauties of Hvar Island, in Jelsa you can rent a car, bicycle or small boat.
Local buses also operate to Hvar Town, Stari Grad and Vrboska daily.

From Jelsa, you can easily visit Brac Island in a day: there are daily excursions by boat (a 60 min ride) to Bol where you can spend the whole day at the well-known Zlatni rat beach.

Owing to its perfect central location, the apartment is equally suitable in the low season when the town is quieter, and the favourable climate of the island offers you a possibility to discover the nearby villages, either driving, or walking through the rich vegetation along the vineyards that yield the island's well-known wines, olive groves and fields with a multitude of medicinal herbs.

Arriving in Jelsa: The nearest airport is Split with a shuttle service from the airport to Split harbour (30 km). The bus stops near the Jadrolinija ticket office where you can buy tickets either for the catamaran to Jelsa (via Bol) 2hrs or for the passenger/car ferry (2hrs) to Stari Grad and then continue by direct local bus to Jelsa (20 min).
If you would like taxi collection from Stari Grad this can be arranged. We do recommend you buy ferry/catamaran tickets in advance online.

Myself and my boyfriend has a wonderful stay at Captain Niko's House (apartment 2). The roof top terrace was particularly great, and we spend a lot of time up there taking in the lovely view, enjoying the sunshine and relaxing. You cant ignore the fact that the church tower directly opposite chimes pretty loudly but to be honest I got used to it and it just added to the charm in my opinion! Everything is within easy reach from Captain Niko's which was great, and what a gorgeous place Jelsa is. We walked to various beaches/coves, went kayaking, had dinner and drinks at the harbour (which is beautiful). I would certainly go back and if I did Captain Nikos would be top of the list to stay. Lada was extremely helpful, answering any questions we had and giving useful advise on local transport etc. I would definitely recommend!

My wife and I (mid to late 50's) have just returned from a delightful 4 night stay in Apartment 2 on the first floor. Jelsa (apparently pronounced Yelsa) is a beautiful town built around a small harbour (check out Google street view and I'll bet you'll book). The waterfront buildings are lovely as are the four churches (don't just visit the main one opposite the apartment). The apartment and town are perfect for those who want a quiet break. I wouldn't recommend it for those with children or those looking to party - Hvar town is where you need to go for nightlife. Visiting in early May not all of the restaurants or boat & car hire shops were open though, even so we were spolit for choice. We understand the season tends to pick up at the end of May. The apartment for two guests is ideal and for us it looked better than in the pictures. The roof terrace is a real bonus (if a bit too hot though the owners have installed a cold shower so you can cool down - no soap or shampoo though as the water is sensibly drained onto the garden). The kitchen is well fitted and there was ample hot water for both of us to shower one after another. What really makes the apartment is that you feel as though you are a true guest of the family - it has after all been in the same family for over 100 hundred years. It has a lovely homely feel but what really tops it is Lada - she is so helpful and speak great English. We would recommend the apartment 100%. Briefly we flew into Split in the morning and caught the 4.00pm ferry (pre booked online and there are ample left luggage lockers at Split port) and arrived at Jelsa at 5.30pm . The apartment is literally a two minute walk from the waterfront. First day we explored Yelsa, second day we hired a scooter and went into Stari Grad, Hvar town, had a late lunch at Vrboska before exploring the east of the island in the afternoon. Finally on our last full day we had a lazy morning on the roof terrace before heading off for a swim at a cove around the headland (head north east). Finally transferring the money for payment was very straightforward. We used Transferwise - much cheaper than a bank and for us it was straightforward with the money arriving the next day. To sum up it is a lovely apartment as all the reviews have said. You won't regret it. ps excellent wifi speed at the flat too!

Excellent apartment in a traditional stone house which is very clean and well maintained. The apartment is situated in an excellent location, close to , but just away from the main square, which offers a variety of restaurants , cycle hire, boat trips and a number of shops The owner , Lada was very helpful, assisting with ferry tickets and general arrangements Would definitely recommend J & J Sheffield

From the outset we knew that this would be a great place to stay ! Communication with the owner, Lada, was excellent and her responses to our enquiries were always prompt, informative and friendly. The house had a beautiful courtyard framed by bougainvillea and passion flower and the upstairs apartment was everything we wanted - spacious, clean and comfortable. Set in a good central location just out of the bustle of the port, we felt at home. We hired bicycles for the week to explore the coastline, finding wonderful quiet coves to enjoy the Croatian sunshine and swim in the crystal clear sea. In the evening we would wander into the town and eat in one of the many excellent restaurants. As it was the last week of August, we experienced the wine festival - Jelsa becoming a vibrant, bustling community in contrast to quieter nights. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Capt Nikos house... and we are already planning to return next year!

If you have come to this apartment looking for a unique property in a picturesque setting with peace, tranquility but also the chance of adventure then look no further. Do not risk missing out by looking else where. I fell in love with Apartment 2, Captain Niko's the moment I looked at the pictures and I fell even more when I arrived. It provides the perfect base for your holiday. We enjoyed breakfast every morning on the balcony, listening to the church bells. Sunday was a treat! I worried that, as someone who loves their sleep, the bells would make me grumpy. I was so wrong and I so miss opening out the shutters and listening to the sounds outside. The facilities have everything you may require. The apartment was spotless and has been very well taken care of. The owners were extremely helpful with travel plans to and from the island. There is a whole folder full of information provided on arrival with advise and ideas to improve your holiday with the best places to eat, location of supermarkets, where to hire etc. Jelsa itself is my dream destination. Take a bike, a kayak or a walk to a secret cove to swim, snorkel or just bask in the glorious sun away from any crowds. We walked to Vbroska, the next village along the coast one day. We also caught a bus to Hvar. It takes 40-50mins but so worth it because there is so much beauty to look at along the way and Hvar is stunning. We hung out, danced and watched the sunset at Hula Hula bar whilst there (it's where the cool people go, we were just pretending for one evening!). Every evening we walked into the harbor in Jelsa and were spoilt for choice for restaurants. There are even a couple of bars to sit, have a cocktail and people watch. Heaven. I would highly recommend Jelsa and Captain Niko's. I do not need to recommend to friends and family as they have already seen our pictures and fallen in love too! We are a couple in our early 30's/late 20's and the island was perfect for us. We do not like the big 'resort' holidays with all the bustle that comes with that environment. At the same time we like to have things to see and do should we choose. Hvar and Jelsa are the perfect setting as you can be as social or secluded as you choose and all within the quirky Captain Niko's. My only concern is that too many amazing reviews will mean that it is fully booked next time we want to visit!

Charming accommodation on a beautiful island
Charming accommodation on a beautiful island
A charming and well equipped traditional stone house right in the centre of the quiet town and harbour of Jelsa. We really enjoyed the views from the roof terrace of the square by the church and fortress and of the hills overlooking the town. The open air shower on the roof was a great bonus after a day spent swimming in the sea. The kitchen was very well equipped. We also enjoyed the lovely views from the bedroom windows of the hills and of the beautiful bourgainvillea growing in the court yard. Lada was a great host and she made us feel very welcome she also had lots of interesting and useful information about the town and island. There are many rocky coves along the shore line where you can swim in the crystal clear waters. We hired bikes and enjoyed cycling along the coast and to the town of Vbroska and beyond. The town of Hvar is also well worth a trip. Getting there by bus is really easy and very cheap. I would recommend taking the water taxi out to the islands. There are so many excellent restaurants in Jelsa, both by the harbour and up the hill at the back of the town. We didn't have a bad meal all week. Excellent for fish lovers! All in all, a fantastic week.
