Maratua Guesthouse

Maratua is beautiful, peaceful and unspoilt. You can travel all around the island on a motorbike, cheap to hire for a day. Even when it rained heavily for one of the days, it was just relaxing to be in nature! A lot of the island and resorts are geared up for diving, and there isn't a lot else to do once you've been to the other smaller islands like Kakaban and Sangalaki and seen what they have to offer. Maratua Guesthouse is family run accommodation, and even though facilities are basic, it has everything you need. Jun and An were great hosts, Jun organised trips that I wanted to do, motorbike hire and him being able to speak English was very helpful for me. Breakfast and dinner were always great (Jun is a good cook), with enough choice to pick from that there was variety for the 4 days I was there. Sunsets are unreal and you can see turtles in the water below the restaurant when the tide is in.

There was nothing I didn't like about Maratua Guesthouse. It's a long journey to get there, and the boat ride from Berau was extremely bumpy, particularly on the way back!
