About this cottage rental

Our quiet oceanfront Cooperage Cottage sits sheltered by tall oak, pine and spruce trees on five private acres of forest and salt marsh. The surrounding area is mostly summer cottages with some year-round residents. It is conveniently located 45 minutes from Halifax and it is close to Chester, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg.

An oceanfront two story, south facing, fully equipped chalet-style house perfect for couples or families. Each level has a living area, bedroom and bathroom.

The upper level bedroom has a queen bed. The lower level bedroom has two extra long twin beds which can be placed together to make a king bed.

The galley kitchen is fully equipped including an induction stovetop, quartz countertop, wall oven, microwave oven and dishwasher.

There is a deck off the upper level living area. The lower level living area includes satellite TV, games, propane fireplace, and a heat pump (heating and cooling system).

There are two full bathrooms, one on each level. The washer & dryer are located in the lower level bathroom. Bathroom towels, beach towels, and linens are provided.

WIFI and BBQ are on site.

At the shoreline of the property you can see the ruins of an old working cooperage. A century ago, wooden barrels were built here for the fishing industry and Chester Basin was well known for its many cooperages. Here, chairs welcome you to enjoy the lovely island views and in the summer you will discover why this area is a popular boating destination. The water is accessible so maybe you prefer to go for a swim or rent a kayak.

One of the islands you can see from here is the legendary Oak Island which is famous for many theories of possible buried treasure. Treasure hunters have been searching for the past 150 years.

We spent a week at the Cooperage Cottage and enjoyed it immensely! This delightful cabin is located on the waterfront and has beautiful views of Borgels Cove and Mahone Bay. We found the location to be perfect for visiting the area attractions. During our trip, we visited Lunenburg (30 minutes from the cabin), Peggy’s Cove (1 hour), Mahone Bay (20 minutes), Truro at the top of the Bay of Fundy (2 hours), Bachman’s Beach (40 minutes), Lightfoot and Wolfville Vineyards (1 hour), and Hall’s Harbour (30 minutes from Lightfoot and Wolfville Vineyards). At the shoreline of the property, there are two Adirondack chairs that sit in a small stand of trees. We found this spot to be especially peaceful and relaxing. We sat there a few times in the late afternoon reading books and searching for sea glass. It is a surprisingly good spot for collecting sea glass! The bed in the upstairs bedroom was quite small and felt more like a full-sized bed rather than a queen. We got used to it, though, and were able to make it work for us. This is not really drawback to the cabin—just a “you-may-want-to-consider”. Also, the kitchen is a little small as other reviews have pointed out, but it is very well equipped. We cooked several meals during our stay and had no issues with the tight space. We really enjoyed having the barbeque grill located on the back deck. We would definitely book this place again, and we highly recommend it for your stay. We had an amazing week!

We had a terrific stay at Cooperage Cottage in spite of Hurricane Dorian. We arrived two days before the storm. The property owner, Shelley, and her husband, Merrill, informed us that the electricity was almost certain to go out during the storm and the cottage water supply uses an electric pump. They recommended that we go to a hotel for a couple of nights and offered to refund the nights that we were unable to stay in the cottage. After the nights in a hotel, the power was back and we returned. They had obviously spent a lot of time and effort cleaning up the outside storm damage - downed tree branches, leaves, etc.The cottage itself was very clean and comfortable. The view is terrific. The location is great for visiting locations on the South Shore... about equal distance from Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg. As you can see from the photograph on the listing, the kitchen is small, but it is very well appointed. Cooperage Cottage is a great find and we would definitely stay there again.
