The vibe was amazing
The position and the view
5.0 / 10.0
The property is very nice situated for a great view. But the view is blocked by uncut trees and plants.
No hot water.
Wifi very unstable. For a property so remote where mobile data is not working, they need a very strong wifi. Unfortunately is not the case. Wifi is crushing every few minutes.
No light in the pool. So at night looks creepy.
We signaled all 3 issues, but none of them got solved.
Also staff needs more training.

The view over the pool, from the restaurant is fantastic, as per photos. Food at the restaurant is also very good.
The resort is dated, service is lacking. Staff don't seem motivated to support guests, I had multiple long wait times for service at the quiet restaurant where it seemed I was invisible, and several strange conversations where it felt staff thought I should order something different, or engage in resort-run activities instead of independently-organised.

The total environment was exceptional with the most stunning views
The hills lol but the hotel provide transport.

Mathis Lodge Amed is set in a hillside jungle landscape within the mountain looking down over Amed and the Bali Sea.
Such a peaceful setting.
The staff were lovely and always ready to help with whatever we needed.
The Day Spa was amazing. My wife took the chance to have a Balinese massage every morning and said the service was wonderful and attentive.
Food was very good and offered a varied menu of varying cuisine.
The pool was cool with a beautiful outlook over the valley down towards Amed and had a shallow section perfect for young families.
We were looking for a short getaway from our regular day-to-day where we could just relax and reset.
Mathis Lodge Amed was the ideal location to allow us this luxury.
Unfortunately, there is some major construction underway right next door to Mathis Lodge Amed and whilst it didn’t ruin our stay here it was impossible not to notice.

The view was incredible and beautiful.
Atmosphere is perfect for couples and very relaxing.
Rusted nails was thrown around could be very dangerous.
Construction was noisy and annoying at some times
Internet was very poor .
Pool wasn’t sooo clean but the staff did clean it very fast after .
The restraint menu was so good but expectable

Lodges, authentic place, food in the restaurant, amazing view, very nice staff
Inconvenience to reach the resort and the terrible road condition to get there
8.0 / 10.0
It was very peaceful and it looked stunning.
It was a considerable distance from the beach, up in the mountain and the connecting road is undergoing works and so is in very very poor condition.

Beautiful location . Fabulous pool. Loved the drive up the mountain.
Would like longer access to the pool lounges set up for sunrise and evenings a and mosquito net for outdoor bed would be a bonus.
The restaurant would benefit from a better vegetarian menu.

We stayed at this hotel for just one night, hoping to visit the famous Gates of Heaven. Unfortunately, the overall experience did not meet our expectations, mainly due to the extremely difficult access to the property.
The hotel is located at the top of a mountain. The final stretch, accessible only by shuttle, was in a dreadful state, under construction, with a crumbling road surface and truly unsafe conditions. To make matters worse, the shuttle broke down halfway up, forcing us to get out in the middle of the road and wait for a replacement vehicle.
The hotel itself is scenic and surrounded by nature, but lacks the attention to detail expected from a property of this category. While our room looked beautiful, the doors didn’t close properly, allowing insects and even cockroaches to enter. No staff member explained how to use the jacuzzi or any of the room’s features.
We also noticed a slower service pace at the restaurant (likely due to local standards), and although the food was good, the prices were quite high compared to the area’s average.
In conclusion, the hotel has potential, but at this time it does not justify the price nor the effort required to reach it. Until the road is made safe, I would not recommend staying here to anyone planning to explore the surrounding area independently, the access is genuinely dangerous. It’s a shame, because with proper infrastructure and more attentive hospitality, this place could offer a truly memorable experience.
The breakfast was good but lacked variety, i had to order additional dishes.

An easy and solid 5/5 for the unforgettable experience. The staff are exceptionally welcoming, and both dinner and breakfast were amazing. The room is comfortable, and the massage was great. The only minor issue was the bumpy ride during pickup, but the overall peacefulness and remoteness made my stay all worthwhile.

The view was amazing and it felt like you were in paradise. The staff were fantastic and couldn’t help us enough. They organised a sunrise trek for us which was lovely. Breakfast was delicious with lots of choice and the restaurant was a perfect choice for an evening meal. We absolutely loved our stay here.

Absolutely stunning view!
Isolated and placed in the heart of the mountains with the ocean view, makes you feel like in paradise.
Friendly and helpful team. Room is specious and very cozy. Delicious food.
Would love to stay there again 🤩

We loved our stay at Mathis Lodge! We came for three nights for our honeymoon and didn’t leave. It’s a stunning vista overlooking the mountains and sea and very tranquil. The restaurant was delicious and reasonably priced, spa was great and all the staff so kind.
Remote location you need to take the hotel shuttle up to worth the ride up if you fancy peace, relaxation and a lush getaway.

Beautiful resort with amazing view and staffs are very friendly.
Some dusts in the curtains. And the travel from downhill to uphill was like riding roller coaster.

The location was so beautiful, the staff AMAZING, the food at the restaurant was incredible!
Unfortunately as you are up in the hills (which is also what makes this place so beautiful), you can’t just walk out into the area for other food / spa, and as the accessibility isn’t ideal (road is in dire need of resurfacing), you are pretty confined to the resort. They do run a regular shuttle service on the hour so getting out for the day is possible, just the evenings that would be trickier to go out.

Mathis Lodge in Amed is a peaceful escape tucked high in the hills, with incredible views over the coastline and jungle. The lodges are beautifully designed and feel really private, and the infinity pool is a standout. Staff were super friendly and made everything feel effortless. Just note, it’s a bit remote, so you’ll need to take a buggy shuttle up a steep track.
Their on-site restaurant, Asmat, is just as special. We loved having breakfast there with panoramic views, and the mix of local and international dishes was really well done. It’s a great spot for a relaxed lunch or a romantic dinner, especially at sunset.
If you’re after somewhere quiet, scenic, and a bit out of the ordinary, this place is worth it.

We loved our stay at Mathys Lodge Amed.
The kindness of the staff, the beauty of the place, the comfort of the room. Everything was perfect!
The warm and beautiful decor, the tranquillity of the place made us feel at home. The breakfasts were simply delicious.
Communication with the staff was impeccable.
We would have liked to stay longer. We'll definitely be back on our next trip to Bali.
Everything was perfect for us

We loved the design—this hotel is stunning in every way: the view, the rooms, the pool, the restaurant—everything.
However, the road to the hotel is very long and rough. You can’t get there on your own from Amash; there’s a hotel shuttle that takes about 30 minutes on a bumpy, damaged road.
We had several issues: there was no hot water in the shower, and even after someone came to fix it, the problem returned. The shower door didn’t close properly, and the A/C didn’t work well—both had to be fixed too. We felt like we spent most of our two-night stay dealing with maintenance.
Breakfast was tasty but very minimal. The restaurant has an amazing view and a great atmosphere, but the food itself didn’t quite meet our expectations.
The manager was very kind and helpful, but overall, we expected a much better experience for the price, and it left us disappointed.

Very unique, located at 500 m high the view on the volcanoes and the sea is breathtaking. The Papua style design of the lodges and restaurant is original and beautiful. The swimming pool is extraordinary, real wow! Mr Koman, the manager, is great having a personal touch with all his guests and in leading his team, 100% of the employees are super friendly and professional. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner with nicely cooked meals, a good restaurant as well 😉.
The problem is the access road, it is in very very bad condition, not what you expect to reach a 4 stars hotel, it takes 20 mns of a very bumpy and very steep track, this can be improved, it’s simple investment decision. Walking in the resort can be challenging for some due to extreme steepness of the road.

It’s a magnificent place with independent houses in the forest above Lipah.
Houses are very quiet with comfy beds and a relaxing patio.
The bathrooms are outside.
The view is perfect and the common areas are extremely well designed
Spa was also very good.
Shuttle bus to the beach runs every hour and stops off at the best beach to snorkel or dive.
The road to the resort is narrow and can be scary.
The bed at our arrival was dirty. We asked to change all sheets and mattress cover and then it was fine.
Restaurant quality is good but could be better.

The location , quietness and peace of mine ,The view is beautiful.
Far from the Airport ( around 3 hours ) , the access to and from the resort is not easy due to improper road conditions.

The place and views are uniquely beautiful, there is style and high service stadard. All this - paradise in the middle if nowhere
Maybe it is starting to wear a little bit, but nothing substantial

Undeniably a beautiful location, up in a far flung valley in Amed. The cabins, pool and communal areas are beautifully designed and maintained and the staff were all very nice and attentive. Really loved the pool area where there were bougainvillea flowers in bloom and butterflies everywhere. Absolutely stunning view from the restaurant down the valley all to the way to the sea.
You are a captured market and they know it. The food in the restaurant is expensive by Bali standards, the wine is eye wateringly expensive. For reference a bottle of Yellowglen cuvee (typically costing $8AUD in Australia) is selling for over IDR900,000 ($90AUD), cant really justify a 10x markup on a cheap wine even when you account for import tariffs etc.
Additionally, the breakfast wasn't included in our booking and upon arrival ended up being IDR250k ($25AUD) per person plus service, plus tax which equates to over IDR600k ($60AUD) a day, which is more than most Sydney cafes. It was quite a nice breakfast but it was also enormous and more than you could ever need. We ended up just going in to Amed town and having Nasi Gorengs (IDR25k) every morning. I really think al a carte breakfast would make people feel less exploited.
The location is more remote than you might realize, and is difficult to get to and from. Whilst Mathis do run a complimentary shuttle hourly up and down the hill, once you get to the bottom of the hill you are on your own. Make sure you have a means of transport whether that be a scooter or a rental car. We were at the mercy of the local taxi mafia and they were charging IDR250,000 to drive 10 mins (4kms) along the coast to where some friends were staying. Compared to south Bali that should nearly equate to a driver for the whole day. Not the hotels fault but be aware when booking.

I didn't expect to have a separate house with a terrace which had a stunning view and also a big bed, where you can chill enjoying the view. The room was beautifully decorated and the bathroom had even a small garden. The design of the whole place is very natural, a lot of wood and plants.
The staff was excellent, very thoughtful and attentive.
The place has such insane views, that it really worth it going all the way up the the mountain to have that view and the infinity pool.
Bathroom amenities were very nice, especially the shower gel with a good fragrance.
There were no mosquitoes around, or any other insects in the room.
I'd recommend taking a snorkeling trip organised by the hotel, and go to underwater temple and pyramids where we saw turtles.
Going all the way uphill in the transfer car, which was cute though. But the road is not the easiest and you must inform the receptionist each time you're planning to take the transfer. One time we were running late and they sent the driver to pick us up from the cafe, which was super helpful.
The food at the restaurant is average, on a pricey side. Tataki was good though.
Massage was also ok. I think bigger towns like Canggu have more professional salons.
In the room I lacked a drying rack and one more chair.

Amazing staff, special thanks to Gede Karang who was super friendly, professional and provided great recommendations on activities in Amed.
Loved the room decor and outdoor bathroom.
Restaurant over looking the pool was very calming. Such a wonderful place that I will definitely be back to visit!
