Tucked away on the site of the Mid Suffolk Light Railway track bed, close to the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum, these delightful and unique holiday properties are based on the railway theme: one a station building plus 5 converted railway carriages, enjoying panoramic views across rolling countryside.

The Station House (ref E5336) is a comfortable detached, three-bedroom station building, typical of the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway. With one double and two twin bedrooms, it can house up to six adults.

Railway Carriage One (ref E5337) is a compact but airy carriage with a living room and kitchen area and sleeps four in comfort. There is a double bedroom and a second sleeping area with two short bunk beds suitable for children.

Railway Carriage Two (ref E5601) is a well-appointed and spacious carriage with two bedrooms, one double, one with two bunk beds, and a further sofa bed in the living area to sleep two. The open plan living area, and an adjoining kitchen, allows families or friends to spread out, relax and enjoy their holiday together.

The Guard’s Van (E5639) offers two comfortable bedrooms for four people, with a double and two single beds. It has a delightful living and dining room with comfortable, upholstered bench seats which retain the original feel of the carriage.

The Italian Carriage (UKC3492) offers accommodation for up to four people. At one end you will find a bunk room, sleeping two people and the other a double bed in the master room. In the centre of the carriage is an open plan seating and kitchen area. The carriage enjoys its own patio and seating area.

Wilby Halt (ref UKC712) is a quirky and unusual property is split over two restored railway carriages. Linked by a railway platform, the first carriage houses the living space including kitchen and comfortable living room. The second carriage is the sleeping carriage where you will find the double bedroom and further room with bunk bed and single bed. This really is a unique experience and perfect for families.

It is surrounded by country lanes and farmland, making it an ideal location for those who enjoy cycling, walking and just relaxing and getting away from it all. It is centrally located, so it is also a great destination for those who want to sample what Suffolk has to offer. The owner’s own swimming pool, ¾ mile away, is available (booking required) and is heated March to November. There is also a hot tub and sauna.

Local amenities can be found in the pretty village of Debenham only 4 miles away, which has some lovely shops, pubs and cafés, as well as a local supermarket and leisure centre. The beautiful village of Mendlesham, 1½ miles, has a pub, post office, local store and bakery. It is within a short walk of the Mid-Suffolk Railway Museum, with steam trains at weekends in summer. Shop, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

These properties can be booked together to accommodate up to 29 guests.

The Guards Van was very clean and cosy with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The milk and cake on arrival are a nice touch. The only issue was the WiFi signal which is too weak to be able to use from the Guards Van. Review independently collected and verified by Reevoo

Overall it was wonderful, just a few little niggles as in the heaters don’t work in lounge area or main bedroom ( although there was a portable electric heater), the seating area in the lounge is so hard to sit on. And the shower cubicle isn’t made for a 18 stone rugby player. Lots of plus points - the bed was really comfortable, the kitchen area is well equipped, the setting is beautiful and I would love to go again but stay in a carriage not the guards van. We had a fantastic short break at the Guards Van in October half term. The children and adults loved the novelty of the train carriage accommodation and the way the accommodation is set out like a railway station. The added bonus of the pool and hot tub was great and being able to book this privately for hourly slots. The carriage was well equipped and the home made cake and milk on arrival was a lovely extra. We look forward to returning and trying out accommodation at one of the other train carriages.

The guards van was delightful but for only two of us. The van was made for four to share and with the extra equipment required for full occupation for us it would have been too cramped. Having said that our daughter, husband and two young children stayed in smaller accommodation and survived so perhaps we are too demanding. I would have to say that we were pleasantly surprised in the way the van had been put together.

So I guess as you’re here you are wondering if Brockford Sidings will make a good holiday destination. Short answer: yes! Long answer: a resounding yes! The Guard’s Van has been lovingly restored. From the outside it retains many of its original features from its time on the rails, whilst the inside has been tastefully adapted to serve as a home away from home. At one end there is a children’s bedroom followed by a lounge (with a small foldable table for dining) and then a small but perfectly formed kitchen. There’s plenty of space in the cupboards and fridge to stock up for several days and, as an added bonus from some holiday rentals, it is remarkably well equipped. And not just with pots and pans, crockery and cutlery, but with other essentials - bin bags, washing up liquid, clothes pegs etc. The master bedroom and shower room are actually in a separate wagon linked to the guard’s van by a gently sloping passage (which our children adored racing down). The bed is a good sized double and is pretty comfortable. There’s even a decent amount of storage in clever little nooks and crannies dotted around the room. And we haven’t even discussed the best part of staying at Brockford Sidings! The location is idyllic and right across the field the sidings back on to is the pool, jacuzzi and sauna. Oh, and a tennis court. Each can be booked via an app you can download (with the on site WiFi) for an hour at a time and they are but a two minute car ride from the main site. It really made the holiday to have such a nice place to come home and relax after a busy day exploring Suffolk and Norfolk. Two huge thumbs up from us! Keep up the good work, Judy and Co.
