Our custom built, 1600 sf cabin, which we affectionately refer to as 'The Fishing Shack', was completed in the fall of 2008. An additional 350 sf studio apartment was completed in 2013. The property is located on the Madison River, known for its majestic beauty and world class fly fishing. The cabin is a gorgeous, 35 minute drive to the entrance of Yellowstone National Park and about an hour to the winter hot spot, Big Sky Ski Resort. With its fabulous location, reclaimed barnwood floors, custom kitchen, 3 flat screen TVs, a Jotul wood-burning stove, and floor to ceiling windows, it is a magical vacation spot.
The primary suite has a queen bed with pillow top mattress, Smart TV, French doors opening to a 5 person Jacuzzi Tub overlooking the river, and a custom built pebble shower with dual shower heads (including a rain head). There are two bedrooms upstairs, each with log bunk beds (twin on top & queen below). Open the windows and let the smell of the mountains and the sound of the river lull you to sleep. The open loft has a cozy seating area, a third TV with DVD player, and game system for the kids (and the kids at heart). Directly on the river, you will find a large fire pit perfect for staying warm and making s'mores while watching the fishermen in your family catch that big brown just feet away.
Our cabin is located 30 minutes south of Ennis and 35 minutes from the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. It is situated in a friendly residential community with about six other homes and delightful neighbors. It is across the river from a Forest Service campground and a short walk to the world famous 'Grizzly Bar & Grill' (you must sample their delightful wine selection).
Fill the long summer days with activities such as fishing from the property, floating the Madison, exploring Yellowstone National Park, hiking beautiful mountain trails, horseback riding, listening to live music while sipping local wines and soaking in the Norris Hot Springs, experiencing an authentic Montana rodeo or riding the antique railway in historic Virginia City.

We loved our stay at the Fishing Shack! Our first delight was the beautiful view of the Madison River right outside of the living room and/or the deck outside. One afternoon we saw an Osprey fly down and grab a fish out of the river and no sooner than he started his climb into the air, a bald eagle flew at him and stole away his catch, so cool! A few of us enjoyed the hot tub even in 40 degree temperatures outside. The Shack floor plan was very accommodating for our group of 7. It was built in a rustic design (lots of woodworking) but everything was still modern and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked; from dishes, pots and pans, casseroles and baking pans, colanders, to spices, cooking oils, etc. The host provided a lot of information about the Shack and the local area. Very helpful! Dave was very quick to respond to our questions and to accommodate our requests. This was reassuring. Thank you to the Stewarts for sharing their beautiful "shack" with us!

We stayed here for our honeymoon trip and this place was PERFECT! We went to the Norris hot springs they recommended as well as the restaurant up the hill and both were amazing. Only 35 min to West Yellowstone entrance and a beautiful drive. Hot tub and deck overlooking the Madison River was great and loved falling deep to the sounds of the river! Amazing and Dave's communication with my husband prior to trip was excellent! Best trip

This was our third year staying at “The Fishing Shack” which says it all. Things we enjoyed most were the location- near to YNP and fly fishing excursions, cleanliness of the cabin, a well equipped kitchen, hot tub, access to the river and breathtaking views. We were fortunate to have a few days of snow which was a bonus, but it was a challenge driving out of the steep graveled driveway. However, that was a very minuscule problem with a Suburban. During previous visits we really enjoyed going to the Grizzly Bar restaurant up the hill, but this year it was closed for the owners who were on a break. Overall we really loved spending time at the cabin. The owner is very communicative and quickly responsive to messaging. We hope to stay again in the future.
