Immerse yourself in the natural wonder of the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, where you can catch rare glimpses of migratory birds. This coastal oasis, just west of Gulf Shores, encompasses over 4,000 acres of diverse habitats, including beach dunes, scrub dunes, freshwater marshes, saltwater marshes, and maritime forests. Part of the central Gulf ecosystem, the refuge is a crucial stopover for the iconic monarch butterfly migration and home to more than 120 bird species, making it a birdwatcher's paradise.

Explore the Refuge's abundant recreational opportunities, from hiking and swimming to photography and shell collecting. Anglers can enjoy both freshwater and saltwater fishing. Take a ferry ride to Dauphin Island to visit the Sea Lab and Estuarium, an engaging educational aquarium that showcases the four key habitats of coastal Alabama: the Mobile Tensaw River Delta, Mobile Bay, the Barrier Islands, and the Northern Gulf of Mexico. Marvel at the 7,000-gallon stingray touch pool and stroll along the Living Marsh Boardwalk, immersing yourself in the region's vibrant coastal ecosystem.

The Estuarium showcases the diverse plant and animal life found in the Estuary and its surrounding marine habitats. Beautifully designed visual exhibits and engaging interactive displays will broaden your understanding of the intricate interactions within the Mobile Bay, the fourth-largest estuary system in the United States.

This island paradise is a haven for bird-watching and sunbathing. Visitors can explore the campground and hiking trails, where they can observe neotropical migrant birds and native wildflowers, especially during the spring bird migration season.

As a property dedicated to wildlife conservation, the area is surrounded by natural vegetation to encourage wildlife activity. These "no mow zones" serve as protected grasslands, providing increased opportunities to observe birds and other wildlife from a distance, without disturbing them. This habitat conservation is crucial in addressing the pressing environmental challenges we face today.

It was nice. Not far from the beach and plenty of room for our group.

This is our 4th year staying at Maw Maws beach house. For 2 weeks a year we feel like this is our home away from home. I can't imagine staying anywhere else. The house is perfect just a short walk to the beach so it was easy to wake up every morning to walk our dogs on the beach and watch the sunrise. Cheryle has done a perfect job decorating and keeping the house updated, the house looks better every year. We especially enjoyed the covered front and back decks and had every meal on the back deck. The kitchen is well appointed so it was easy to cook every meal there saving us time and money. We also enjoyed the grill and sitting area under the house where we could enjoy grilling our catch of the day. We were able to surf fish on the beach, and also took advantage of the fishing pier by the ferry on Mobile Bay, where we caught several of our meals. I highly recommend this wonderful beach house and intend on staying there for many years to come.

There is some major maintenance that is needed on this property. The wood flooring is damaged. The subfloor is also very soft in places, so soft that we thought we would fall through in areas if stepped on just right. There were DampRid bags in all the closets that were full of water that needed changed. The house smelled moldy/damp. There is mold in the showers. All of the vents are rusted. The driveway is full of weeds and the grass needs mowed. In other reviews the owned touches on the reason she keeps the grass long. But other lawns are mowed in the neighborhood. And if you look at pictures of the house online the lawn is mowed. The beach equipment like the wagon is broken and rusted out so we couldn’t use it to transport beach items to the beach. The beach umbrella was also broken. The location of this house to the beach was amazing. There were plenty of beach chairs and beach items at the house. The beds were cozy. Unfortunately we feel this house isn’t worth the price we paid for it. Next time we will use a property management company for renting properties. Ones that have a maintenance team so we know for sure what type of property were renting.
