After the free cancellation period had expired, the host Christine sent me a message saying I needed to pay an extra charge for bedsheets. I messaged back to politely remind her that all additional costs must be included in the listing, as per the VRBO rules for hosts. She replied, just saying "ok for the sheets". When we arrived, she greeted us at the property and showed us around, but then told us to pay her more money before she handed over the keys. I explained that we had already paid for everything up front, showed her our payment confirmation, and a French translation of the VRBO rules about additional costs. I also showed her screenshots I had taken of a webchat I had with a VRBO agent confirming that she wasn't allowed to demand more cash from us. At this point she flew off the handle and started shouting at us to leave the house. She tried to push my wife and shouted at our 6 year old daughter, who subsequently burst into tears. We asked her to please leave as she was scaring the children, and even to take the sheets with her if she wanted. It was late in the evening and we had been driving for 6 hours. We were all tired and had nowhere else to go. After a lengthy argument in which we sat down and refused to leave (the children were hiding in the car, crying) Christine eventually left. We had paid to stay for 2 nights but wanted to get out of there as soon as possible, so we had one restless, worried sleep and left first thing the next morning. In the morning as we were preparing to leave we saw Christine slowly driving past the front of the house on the driveway looking in the windows, along with a man in a truck. The whole experience was terrible, strange, and very unsettling. We have travelled all over the world and have stayed in countless properties, good and bad, but have never encounted anything as awful as this. Avoid at all costs.
