The Troon beach cottage in Hermanus made a good first impression: clean, thoughtfully decorated, and stocked with the kinds of practical touches—tea, coffee, beach toys for the children—that suggest the hosts have stayed in enough rentals to know what actually matters. Check-in was straightforward, and when questions arose, responses came quickly.
The garden proved unexpectedly rewarding. Proteas dominated, along with other indigenous plantings that attracted a steady stream of visitors: weavers building their intricate nests, and various other local birds whose morning routines provided reliable entertainment. From the back patio, you could glimpse the ocean and, more noticeably, hear it—the sound of waves establishing a pleasant, persistent backdrop.
The beach lay within easy walking distance, close enough to make multiple trips reasonable. The neighborhood felt secure and well-situated, with restaurants and shops nearby but not obtrusively so. It was the sort of place that managed to be both convenient and genuinely restful, which is rarer than it should be.

As the property accommodates pets, there was unfortunately a constant urine smell on the large lounge mat which made tv watching limited. There were some additional pockets of urine smell around the house (not the bedrooms though).
I did address this with the host, who offered to remove the mat, but I declined given our stay was very short (3 days) and the amount of effort required to move it was somewhat unfair on the host. I know this will be addressed by the host and owner and am sure/certain this will not repeat itself. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Troon cottage and will return!
