About this cottage rental

The old "porcherie" is a stunning gîte conversion of a former stone-built barn. The conversion, completed in 2016, has resulted in a contemporary, stylish look and feel, whilst retaining original stonework, wooden beams and feature windows. The two large bedrooms each have a double or kingsize bed, as well as a small single bed (80x190) if required. Both bedrooms have their own shower room with toilet and basin.

The open-plan kitchen/living space comprises an island with a gas hob and electric oven, plus four bar stools. The kitchen is also equipped with a large fridge-freezer, dishwasher and all the kitchen tools and utensils to satisfy the keenest cooks. I ensure that there are plenty of plates, cutlery and glasses.

A comfortable sofa and armchairs provide space to relax out of the sun, to chill out with a book or movie. A DVD player (along with a selection of DVD's) is available along with Wi-Fi to keep you in touch with the world.

Large folding doors open onto the al-fresco dining terrace with its shade sail giving relief from the midday sun.

The large open garden is mainly a grassed area with a patch where we grow summer vegetables. The large oak tree provides a nice shaded area to lie in the hammock and dream away the afternoon.

When the heat gets up, you can simply cool off or take a serious swim in the lap pool, which is 13x3m and 1.35m deep.

There is plenty of parking for several cars and a well-equipped workshop should you feel the need to tinker.

The gîte is surrounded by open countryside and there are numerous walks directly from the front door. If you rise early in the morning, you catch wild deer and hares grazing in the fields, and there are always birds of prey and smaller species to be found in the fields and woodland around the property.

The award-winning historic town of Cordes-sur-Ciel is a 30-minute walk, 10-min bike ride or 5-min car trip away. Cordes has a busy Saturday market and night markets during July and August. Many of the local vineyards also have "apéro-concerts" during the peak season.

Starting with an amazing welcome/Check-in by the lovely hosts we had a really relaxing time with our family at this place. It was always made sure that we had everything we need from the fully equipped kitchen up to nice recommendations to eat out. We are already planning to come back next year!

Lovely quiet location in a small commune, ideal for us (a car is needed). Kathy is available if needed and a lovely, helpful lady, as was her partner. Private pool is always a must for us and great to have this however, some tlc and upgrade required for this area. As the gite is on the market completely understand not undertaking this renovation at present and did not bother us to any great extent. Enjoyed our stay and watching the bees, grasshoppers, bats and deer.

As we discovered, the Tarn region is outstanding; plenty to see, activities to enjoy and good food & wine to sample. The gite is well located and visually beautiful. It is within walking distance to Cordes and set down a quiet country lane next to the owner's property. We stayed as a family of five, incl. three late teenagers, for two and a half weeks. Although comfortable and charming, there were a few things with which we had to 'make do', which did disappoint: - on arrival, and for the first week or so, the swimming pool was algae green and not to be used. This was during the period when the weather was blazing hot. Thereafter, the pool required various treatments that had to be worked through before it was safe, and then the pool had to be topped up with water daily - only the water was ice cold and the use of the pool became impossible. Our hostess, Kathy, did offer to compensate us for this but, a fortnight later, this has not yet been followed through on. We are very much hoping to hear back in this respect. - as others have suggested the pool area could also be improved by offering some more privacy, more shade options and particularly something different to the black artificial decking that burned the soles of our feet. - the gite has no air conditioning and, in the height of summer when temperatures were high (particularly so this year), the rooms were suffocating. After some days, a neighbour arranged that the children could have an a/c machine in their bedroom, and this proved a blessing. - although described as a very well-equipped kitchen, we were missing a number of key essentials. Importantly, there is no extractor fan and things smoked up very easily. With one bedroom directly next to the kitchen, it was food smells, heat and airbone fat without borders. Ultimately, we simply found it better to cook outside or eat cold cuts. - as a family, we like to explore and missed a welcome pack from the owner, with key information on the property and what's on in the area, where to visit, where to shop/eat/swim etcetera. The tourist offices were quite parochial, so it took us visits to different ones in different parishes to build up a fuller picture of what there is to do. Given the lack of tourist books on the area, a welcome pack would have helped enormously. In short, nice, but we feel that it could have been so much more, especially considering the amount that we paid.
