    Whale Island was an absolute highlight of our trip to Vietnam. We were travelling from north to south and I was really keen to get to the coast. I fortunately stumbled on this on maps and I’m so glad we did. If you want somewhere which is stunningly beautiful and away from the crowds, I would absolutely recommend the island. We arrived into Tuy Hoa on the sleeper train and got a Grab taxi from there. The taxi driver asked us if we were sure we were going the right way - that’s when you know you’re off the beaten track! He had to negotiate some narrow roads and mopeds in Dam Mon, but we made it to the pier. Whale Island run a shuttle boat between the island and the pier. I let them know we’d be on the 7am one and they were there to collect us. Upon arriving, we were stunned by how beautiful the island was. It is a very special place and the staff are so kind and welcoming. We stayed in one of the Deluxe rooms and it was lovely. We especially loved the outdoor shower. The lack of air-con was actually fine - we had a ceiling fan and a standing fan on at nighttime (and were staying in mid-July). We slept well even without it. The food was really well done. Breakfast was a little more basic, but everything we needed to keep us going. Lunch and Dinner were both good - they ask for dietary requirements, but you eat what you are given (with lots of dishes for each meal as a spread). I found this a really fun part of the experience and it meant I tried things I wouldn’t have ordered in a restaurant elsewhere. We took the boat out snorkelling and we saw some amazing coral and lots of fish. Where we snorkelled (about a 45 minute boat journey away), some plastic debris did start to wash up where we were, but the island are clearly doing an amazing job keeping the resort side of the island clear. We were amazed by how little there was on the beach by the resort - we saw a lot more in Ha Long Bay. Highlights were swimming from the beach out onto the little pontoons (bring footwear to protect your feet from sea urchins), drinking cocktails in the bar area right next to the sea and taking the short walk up to the viewing point on the walking route for impressive views of the area. Photos barely do it justice. This is a special place!

    Since you'll be traveling to the island by boat, you should prioritize a compact suitcase or backpack. Don't forget to bring sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and especially insect repellent, as the island has a lot of natural vegetation.

    This is my third visit, and Whale Island still retains its pristine, unspoiled beauty, untouched by commercialization. It's a rare place in Vietnam that still maintains such purity, truly something to cherish.

    It is an untouched and peaceful area. There are a lot of insects and mosquitoes. However, we don't have any other choice, so we have to stay there.
