    There were ants everywhere in the room. They even got into our luggage, and we had a terrible time trying to get them all out. 😭 I’m sure the hotel was aware that this room had an ant problem, so I really don’t understand why we were given this room in the first place. We arrived late at night and were only staying to sleep, so when we noticed a few ants, we didn’t bother asking to change rooms. But when we saw how many ants had gotten into our luggage the next morning, we were absolutely horrified. This was a very unpleasant experience and something that should have been addressed before assigning the room to guests.

    Unfortunately, I would not recommend our stay at Wairakei Resort Taupo. The biggest issue was the condition of the carpet in our room, 701. It was extremely worn and damaged in several areas, with sections visibly frayed and deteriorated, as shown in the photos. As we are allergy sufferers, the condition of the carpet was particularly concerning. We were so uncomfortable with it that we ended up placing towels over parts of the carpet. I called reception shortly after checking in to raise the issue. Rather than having someone come to the room or arranging for the duty manager to contact us, I was told that I needed to come to reception in person because the duty manager was not available by phone. Our room was on the other side of the resort and required travelling back by car, so I found this quite inconsiderate. We decided not to make the trip back to reception, and unfortunately nobody from the hotel followed up with us afterwards. The room was also part of a connecting room arrangement, and we could clearly hear the guests in the adjoining room, which affected the overall comfort and privacy of our stay. There were certainly some positives. The bathroom and toilet were clean, parking was convenient, and the resort has good facilities, including a gym and sauna. However, some areas of the property would benefit from a little more attention and maintenance. Location wise, the resort is around 10 minutes by car from Taupo town. Having previously stayed closer to the town centre, I personally found those locations much more convenient and would choose to stay closer to town next time. Overall, while the resort has some good facilities, the condition of our room and the lack of follow up after we raised our concerns were disappointing. Based on our experience, we would not return.

    We stayed at Wairakei Resort and, unfortunately, overall, we did not enjoy our stay as much as we had hoped. Considering it is part of the Accor group, we expected a much higher standard of cleanliness, facilities and service. The swimming pool was not clean, and the rooms felt old and not thoroughly cleaned, with dust on various surfaces. Although we booked a family villa with a kitchen, washing machine and dryer, the laundry setup was poorly designed. The washing machine blocked the laundry door from closing, and there was no proper exhaust or ventilation when using the dryer. We felt uncomfortable running the dryer while we were in the room. The water pressure was very low, which made showering inconvenient. There were also no non-slip bath mats or handrails for the bathtubs, which was a safety concern, especially for families with children. We also felt that breakfast was not worth the extra cost. Despite the resort having many guests, the egg options were very limited, with only one type available. On our first night, we contacted reception to request a few things, but the staff member advised that she was alone and attending to other guests, so she would not be able to assist us for long. We understand staff can be busy, but this was not the level of service we expected. Communication from reception was also inconsistent. The night before, we were told that we needed to hire tennis rackets, but the following day we discovered that they were free to use. On the positive side, check-in was easy, the restaurant staff were lovely, and the spa was very nice. The spa area had a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere and genuinely felt like a retreat. The beds were comfortable, and the villa offered good space for a family. The location is also excellent if you prefer somewhere quiet and away from Taupō town, with Huka Falls only about five minutes away. Overall, it did not feel like the luxury resort stay we had expected, and we left disappointed. I will not happily recommend this place to someone else
