VILLA THE SPOT KOH SAMUI

We really enjoyed our stay at Villa The Spot. The scenery is beautiful, the pool is gorgeous, and the sea views from the property are absolutely amazing. The rooms are quite basic, with no TV and just the essentials, such as a kettle, but they are spacious and the views more than make up for it. The food was lovely and we really enjoyed our meals. However, we did feel that some of the prices were quite high compared with other places we had eaten in Thailand. Our bill included a beef/chicken burger at 390 baht, garlic bread at 190 baht, stir-fried garlic at 250 baht, rice at 100 baht, a Pina Colada at 350 baht and a classic Mojito at 340 baht. We were also charged 500 baht for the scooter rental and 200 baht for a taxi to Panyadee School. We spoke to the owner about the difference between the menu prices and what we were charged, and he explained that the menu must have been an old one. He also said that the correct information was available in our room. However, we had been given an outdated menu, so we had no way of knowing that the prices had changed. We understood his explanation, but we were still quite shocked to hear how much we had been charged for the food and especially the drinks, as the prices we had seen on the menu were nowhere near as high. At one point, because of the significant difference and lack of clarity, we were genuinely worried that the higher prices may have been applied intentionally. We obviously cannot say that this was the case, but it was how the situation made us feel at the time. We also weren’t given a receipt at the time, so it wasn’t particularly clear what each charge related to. There was also a 45 baht minibar charge. The location is definitely something to be aware of. The owner is very upfront about how steep and difficult the road to the property is, and he does offer lifts or the option to rent scooters. We rented a scooter for 24 hours for 500 baht, which we felt was quite expensive compared with other scooter rentals we’d seen. We were also charged 240 baht for a lift that was only around five minutes, which we felt was quite expensive. The main thing we would suggest is simply being more upfront and clear about additional costs. We were offered two bottles of water, so naturally assumed they were complimentary, but were then charged for them. We were a little shocked by this as we hadn’t asked for the water or been told there would be a charge. We completely understand that things cost money, but if something is offered to guests, it would be much better to clearly explain the price beforehand so there are no surprises. There are also quite a few family cats and kittens around the property. We personally loved them and thought they were adorable, although we can appreciate that some guests may not be as comfortable with animals around. Overall, Villa The Spot is a lovely, family-run place with gorgeous scenery, a beautiful pool and incredible sea views. We enjoyed our stay and appreciated the friendliness of the family. Our main criticism would be around the pricing and transparency of additional costs. If something is chargeable, particularly things like water or a short lift, we would simply recommend making the price clear beforehand. Likewise, if menu prices have changed, it would be helpful to update the menus in the rooms and restaurant so that they match the final bill. Despite these points, we did enjoy our stay, and the views really are fantastic.

We chose this villa for one night only but could easily have stayed for a few! Things to know… 1. A man and wife own and run this location. They are wonderful chefs, they are the taxi drivers and they are management for the cleaning staff. They built this location from the ground up and have done a wonderful job with maintenance! 2. The taxi is required and recommended in order to drop you right at the door due to the narrow windy and very hilly road to get there. The man that owns this is the taxi driver and will tell you what the charge is when you book the taxi but it’s roughly ฿500. 3. Our Villa was right in front of the shared pool. There are two shared pools. The pool was clean, and infinity pool, and the view is incredible! The pool lights up at night, which creates a stunning ambience. 3. This location is extremely isolated so unless you drive or book taxi service, be prepared to stay on location. There are snacks and drinks in the fridge and in your room for a cost. We brought a few snacks and a bottle of wine. I would recommend bringing a book or cards or a game as there is not a lot to do but relax. There is a common area that you can make additional food in with a microwave as well as lounging area above it, which I didn’t experience so cannot comment on it. 4. We ordered dinner, which was cooked by the husband and wife in their office/kitchen. This couple also lives here. The food was absolutely aromatic and amazing!! they set up the dining area alongside the deck with a view and served us right after it was prepared. There was a battery operated candle, and they put a lamp out for additional lighting. We each had a glass of wine to finish off our meal. They gave us a complementary dish of fruits as well. 5. Our room had 180° views and glass all around to see out. There are blackout curtains to close for privacy and sleep. The room comes equipped with a safe, a blow dryer, a mini fridge with drinks, and three booklets containing the menu, the drinks, and local tours if you wanted. The bathroom is very clean and quite large with double sinks and a shower +2 robes. As we were here in September during rainy season, it was not very busy, which was also nice. 6. We would highly recommend this to anybody looking for a peaceful oasis away from people!
