Average experience - current maintenance and hygiene need significant improvement We stayed at The Cliff Edge Coorg in Room A6 (Ground Floor) from 4th to 5th September 2026. We had booked 2 nights at around ***/night through Agoda but had to leave after 1 night because my wife was not feeling well. Location: The hotel is in/near Madikeri town, around 10 minutes from the main town area, which is convenient. However, our ground-floor room had no sightseeing/scenic view from the balcony. What was good: The receptionist was very polite, helpful and understanding, especially when we had to leave early. He treated us very well. Breakfast was also not bad — we had puri, chana sabji and egg fry. The options were limited but sufficient for breakfast. Main concerns — hygiene & maintenance: We booked this property after seeing positive reviews, but our actual experience in September 2026 did not match the impression created by those reviews. Perhaps the property was better maintained previously, but the current condition needs attention. * Wash-basin tap was broken. * Bathroom door could not be properly closed because the wooden door appeared to have expanded. * Bathroom water tap was extremely hard to operate. * Room walls were visibly unclean. * Balcony curtain was poorly maintained and appeared to need proper washing. * We noticed a particular smell in the room which may bother some guests. * Bed was a spring-type bed, but the quality felt somewhat cheap. * Pillows were also basic and may be uncomfortable for some people. * Bed cover/comforter quality was not necessarily bad, but cleanliness was a concern. I noticed multiple patches/stains that looked concerning, although I cannot say what caused them. * We normally carry two extra bedsheets while travelling, which helped us manage the situation. * The bedsheet provided was not sufficiently warm, and we felt cold during the night as Coorg was cold in September. Individually, some issues may seem minor, but together they indicate that basic maintenance and housekeeping need more attention. At approximately ***/night, I would expect basic cleanliness and functioning fittings to be properly maintained. I was not expecting a luxury experience, only better basic hygiene and upkeep. Refund issue: We had to leave one night early. Before leaving, the receptionist specifically told us that he would speak with his manager and arrange a refund for the unused second night, excluding applicable tax, and that we did not need to contact Agoda separately. He also said he would send an email confirmation by evening. Unfortunately, the promised follow-up did not happen and we did not receive the refund or confirmation. I understand that Agoda’s policy may not automatically entitle us to a refund. My concern is that the hotel representative specifically promised that the refund would be arranged, and that commitment was not followed through. If the hotel could not provide the refund, a clear communication would have been better than making a promise and then not responding. Overall, the receptionist’s personal behaviour was excellent, and the location is convenient, but the current hygiene, maintenance, bedding/linen condition and follow-through on commitments need significant improvement. I would recommend checking the current condition of the property rather than relying only on older reviews before booking.
