Had a great stay, an excellent location right at Loftus where we needed to be!

My experience at this hotel was deeply disappointing, particularly because of how a late-night check-in issue was handled. I had a confirmed booking and had called earlier in the day to advise that I would be arriving late. I also emailed a copy of my ID before arrival. When I arrived at approximately 00:49 with my two-year-old child, I was refused check-in because I did not have my physical ID card with me. I understand that hotels have legal and security requirements around guest identification. My concern is not that the hotel has an ID policy, but that there appeared to be no meaningful contingency, escalation or safety process for a guest who finds herself in this position in the middle of the night. South Africa has serious safety concerns, particularly for women travelling at night. I was fortunate that my Bolt driver was honest and willing to assist me after I was turned away. Another woman, travelling alone or with a young child, may not be as fortunate. What disappointed me further was that I had already communicated my late arrival earlier in the day, yet there was seemingly no process to ensure that the night team was aware of this or to remind me beforehand that only an original physical ID would be accepted. I eventually returned the following morning with the required identification and was checked in successfully. I believe hotels should absolutely comply with identification requirements, but compliance should be accompanied by clear communication, management escalation procedures and a safe interim option for vulnerable guests who cannot immediately satisfy a check-in requirement. This experience highlighted a gap between policy compliance and guest safety. I sincerely hope the hotel and Protea/Marriott review how similar situations are handled in future.
