    Upon checking in, we immediately faced an issue. During booking, a double bed was given as an option for the standard room for twin beds, not a special request. However, the staff explained that they do not see the option, firstly trying to reason it as a special request. While this issue more likely arose from setting up the listing (including the poor selection of photos used), it felt like they were all too happy to jump in and put the blame on third party booking sites. Staff did offer a solution to another room that we could move in to the next day. In the first room, the shower extractor fan was not working. The light switches 'AND' and 'OR' gates were messed up, creating a puzzle to be solved when toggling the lights. Shower power kept decreasing over time with inconsistent temperatures. Hair dryer stopped working upon turning on. In the second room on the forth floor, light switches and extractor fan were fine. Had the same shower issue. The covers had red splotch stains. There was a soft humming sounding like washing cycles every night, but it was especially bad on Monday night. Parking was charged at 10 pounds per 24 hours. We noticed that the carpark was less filled at night than during the day. It is unknown whether drop offs also incur this charge. Location was poor with no nearby public transport or amenities, putting guests heavily reliant on the hotel. We were also told that one of the room's air conditioning did not work, mentioned in older reviews. Taking all into consideration, it felt like the hotel was not interested in fixing faulty facility. In general, the stay felt underwhelming. It felt as though the staff were doing their best with the cards they were given. Would not recommend to stay.

    After a shaky start with a few problems in our room, we ended up having a fabulous stay at the Mercure Birmingham. The air conditioning in our original room wasn't working, but once the management became aware of the situation, they couldn't have done more to put things right. They went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and genuinely cared that we enjoyed our stay. The staff were friendly, professional and attentive throughout, and their excellent customer service completely turned our experience around. It's always reassuring when a hotel is willing to listen, act quickly and make guests feel valued. Thank you to the duty manager ( i forgot you name but you know how you are you were there on Friday morning)and the whole team for making our stay so special. We wouldn't hesitate to stay again and would happily recommend the Mercure Birmingham to others.
