There are limited options for staying in Shimabara itself which is why we stayed here. The cost of us staying two nights here was three times the price of us staying three nights in a 5 star hotel in Nagasaki. Unfortunately, despite this being an aesthetically pleasing place to stay there are many issues. The biggest of these being that the hotel is not secure. There is direct entrance to the room/garden off the shopping street through a gate and then a door. We came back during the day to feed the baby and found that the room had been left open and unlocked (including the gate) to the street. Cleaning was part-way done but there was no member of staff and the room was completely unsecured. This made us very uneasy as we had valuables, including passports, in the side in the room because there was no lock box/safe provided. Despite there being a water heater for the shower, the taps only had cold water which was freezing due to the outside temperature. The tap in the main bathroom was sensor operated and extremely sensitive which meant that you were unable to even add hot water from the kettle into the sink to be able to wash your face comfortably. The bath had not been cleaned in a long time and we did not feel that it was suitable for use to bathe our baby, plus the only option for hot water in the bath meant running the tap for 40 minutes to get hot spring water. The heater in the main area was sufficient to keep it warm, however the bedroom was extremely cold even with the AC turned to hot, the doors left open to the main area and an additional electric heater on overnight. The lights of the shopping street are on all night and the shoji screens in the bedroom do not block any of the light resulting in the bedroom being bright all through the night. It made it difficult for us and our baby to sleep. Also, there were many loud locals shouting in the street during the night which was clearly audible in the bedroom. This is in addition to the constant music being played through the speakers in the shopping street during the day.

This is a tiny hotel set in a converted Japanese residence. The conversion is incredible, has to be seen to be believed, it is so beautiful and tastefully done. Extremely comfortable, and once in a lifetime experience to stay there, cannot recommend it highly enough. The hotel is attached to a coffee shop where Japanese breakfast is served and so good it shouldn’t be missed. Opposite is the restaurant Madoka, which is one of the very best restaurants we found with amazing food.
