this is a temple stay. You are greeded by a monk. not a receptionist. He is serious, not welcoming but efficient . The room has everything we needed included private toilet and sink.. There were no towels. The onsen was clean and hot. The room was heated nicely but the rest of the facility was not including morning warning services. I correct myself in that the eating room was heated and the food was very good. Iverall it was a very positive experience and I would stay again. After the morning services, the senior monk took us on a tour of the temple and showed us some of the very important possessions. I have stayed at other temples that are more beautiful but also much more expensive and in a worse location.

Overall a great way to experience the Shokubo with the local monks . But those who want to enjoy the Okunoin Cemetery might feel very limited with the restricted bathing time. For those who buy the Okunoin night tour ,please keep in mind that the bathing time here is open only 16:00- 20:00, which doesnt make sense as you won't be able to make it in time after the night tour, which finishes around 21:00 and morning shower won't be available either. And it sucks if you want to enjoy Okunoin fully during the day time, as you need to rush back for bathing in the late afternoon. Also the temple gate closes at 21:00, so you won't be able to enjoy Okunoin so long at night.
That's the only minus point in my opinion. Other than that, the food, the monk's hospitality and the room were all great.

The temple was clean and location was ok. But, there were hardly any interactions with the monks. The food was just ok. There was a loud mechanical noise that kicks up during the night that kept us awake. There was no one to talk about the noise because all the lights in the building was turned off.
