    A very pleasant stay at Hotel Gotyk, which, despite the name, turned out to be remarkably short of Gothic vampires. No nocturnal bloodsuckers lurking in the corridors, no suspicious coffins in the wardrobe and, disappointingly, nobody asking whether I had brought the garlic. The room was pleasant and comfortable, with everything needed for a good night’s stay. The real star, however, was breakfast: a big, generous and very pleasant buffet, with plenty of choice and enough food to set even the most enthusiastic sightseeing tourist up for the day. The only surprise came after dark. Toruń’s historic centre may look wonderfully medieval and tranquil, but apparently this does not prevent people on large motorbikes from roaring around the streets at night. The Gothic architecture provides an excellent acoustic chamber, so every passing motorcycle gets the full cathedral treatment. Still, that is hardly the hotel’s fault. Overall, Hotel Gotyk is a comfortable, friendly and well-located base for exploring Toruń — and considerably more peaceful than its name might suggest, provided you can negotiate the occasional nocturnal motorbike enthusiast.
