We booked a 3-night stay at Courtyard by Marriott Iloilo, expecting the level of service, privacy, and security associated with the Marriott brand. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing enough that we decided to check out after just one night because we no longer felt comfortable staying there. 1. Serious privacy and security concern While my husband, son, and I were resting in our room, we heard the doorbell ring twice in quick succession. I immediately went to the door, but before I had the opportunity to open it, a woman outside opened our room door herself. I was understandably startled and taken aback. She explained that she was checking whether the room was occupied. What concerned me most was that she did not announce herself as Housekeeping before entering. She simply rang the doorbell and, without receiving any response from us, opened the door. I immediately reported the incident to the front desk and asked whether this was standard operating procedure. Unfortunately, I was not given a clear explanation. About 15 minutes later, a housekeeping manager called to apologize. However, I was even more concerned when I was told that this was apparently standard procedure as long as there was no “Do Not Disturb” (DND) sign on the door, and that we should use the DND sign next time. I strongly disagree with this approach. A guest not displaying a DND sign should not automatically mean that hotel staff can open and enter an occupied room without first clearly identifying themselves and receiving a response. There should be a reasonable expectation of privacy and security when staying in a hotel. Because of this incident, we no longer felt comfortable staying in the hotel. Although we had booked three nights, we decided to check out after only one night. I subsequently sent a formal complaint letter to the hotel, but until now, I have received no response whatsoever. 2. Unpleasant experience with a waiter at breakfast We also had an unpleasant interaction with one of the waiters at the breakfast buffet. Since there were three of us, I simply asked for three glasses. The waiter responded by glaring at me. I’m not sure if she misunderstood what I was asking for, but even if there was a misunderstanding, I felt that the glare was unnecessary. A simple clarification or polite response would have been more appropriate. It may seem like a small incident, but these little interactions matter, especially when you are a guest expecting a certain level of hospitality from a Marriott property. 3. Confusion regarding our breakfast inclusion We booked the room for three guests with breakfast included. During check-in, the front desk simply informed us that breakfast was included. Naturally, we understood this to mean breakfast was included for the three guests covered by our booking. However, when we went to breakfast, we were told that the breakfast inclusion was only for two guests. We were therefore told that the third guest would have to pay for the buffet. This was particularly frustrating because the limitation had not been explained to us during check-in. It could have easily been clarified at the front desk and avoided an uncomfortable situation at breakfast. The charge for the third guest was only waived later, upon checkout. We appreciate that the hotel ultimately waived the charge, but the issue should have been resolved at the time of breakfast rather than leaving us to deal with the confusion and additional charge first. More importantly, despite our decision to leave after only one night because we felt uncomfortable following the room-entry incident, we were not offered a refund for the two unused nights of our three-night booking. I understand that hotel reservations have cancellation policies, and I am not disputing that policies may apply. However, given the circumstances that led us to leave early, I had hoped the hotel would at least acknowledge the seriousness of the situation and consider an appro
