The Clarion Hotel in Leesburg, Virginia, left a lot to be desired during my stay. The rooms are in poor condition, with noticeable wear and tear, making the overall environment feel unclean and neglected. The staff seems frustrated as if this is an owner problem tying their hands. Getting to and from the hotel is a hassle due to its inconvenient location, and it’s definitely not a place where you can just step out for a walk to nearby attractions. While they do offer breakfast, it’s pretty basic—think eggs, some sort of breakfast meat, cereal, a waffle maker, and pre-packaged bagels and pastries. The hours for breakfast are limited to 6-9 AM, which might be tough if you’re hoping to sleep in but usual for hotels. The bar and restaurant don’t seem to stick to their posted hours, so you can’t really rely on them being open. Overall, though, this hotel didn’t meet my expectations and needs a lot of improvement.

Unfortunately, the staff at this hotel seems to be struggling with limited resources or lack of leadership care, and some attribute the insufficient cleaning help to a supposed shortage of willing workers. It’s rumored that most of their business comes from local construction crews, so they may not focus much on maintaining customer relations since they have an acceptable revenue stream. The restaurant here serves great food, but since it's contracted and caters to private events, it doesn't prioritize hotel guests and closes for special events that are not published for reference. The rooms, considering the "Clarion" name and price, are quite run down. On the plus side, there’s a hot breakfast available with items like waffles, scrambled eggs, breakfast meat, bread, and cereal, which can help offset your expenses. The exercise facilities are basic, with most machines out of order, though there is a complete set of free weights. The swimming pool’s condition is questionable: the website states it is closed, but the staff says otherwise. Regardless, it doesn’t look routinely maintained. The rooms have uneven bare floors, outdated lighting, and bathrooms that are in poor condition with missing drain plugs, old fixtures, and peeling paint. The mini fridge appears dirty and old, the curtains are in poor shape with holes, and the single-cup coffee maker is broken. However, 24/7 coffee and hot water are available in the lobby. While the hotel offers some interesting history and there’s a sign mentioning complimentary rock candy (which they do not provide), the mansion attached to the property looks rundown & abandoned and is not related to the hotel or restaurant. Some entry doors don't work, so you'll need to keep Door A propped open or enter through the lobby. The location is decent but requires circling the highway to reach destinations, and it's not walkable due to the lack of sidewalks. I’m glad I only booked a week to assess this place, as it may not be ideal for a longer stay with competitive prices nearby.

The rooms are run-down, distressed, and in dire need of serious renovation. Upon arrival, the floors were gross and looked like it hadn't been cleaned, with mysterious stains that I didn't even want to think about. The paint was peeling off in strips, revealing what seemed like ancient layers of neglect. The bathroom door didn't close properly or secure. The external keyed entries were a broken and confirmed by staff, when approached. AJ, the night staff was pleasant and helpful, considering the conditions they work in. They were apologetic about the state of the rooms and did their best although their hands were clearly tied. The saving grace of this hotel is the restaurant, which, let me clarify, is not even affiliated with the hotel itself. The food was exceptionally good—both Indian dishes, as well as, the other offerings. Unfortunately, it was not available to guests when it is hosting events and closed on Saturdays. The complimentary breakfast is not apart of the restaurant, although served in their space. The pool was not safe to use during this hot summer week, with broken furniture surrounding it to boot. Even out dated offerings of Complimentary Rock Candy because of the history surrounding this place that they post is not available. Housekeeping is hard to come by, as told by the manager and cleaning did not occur, except to take towel and not exchange them. Unless you have a peculiar fascination with the macabre charm of decaying hotel rooms or a masochistic streak that craves the challenge of dysfunctional amenities, I would strongly advise looking elsewhere for accommodation. The staff and the rogue restaurant may be diamonds in the rough, but they can't polish the tarnished reputation of this establishment.
